Sturgill Simpson To Star In “The Creator,” Which Just Might Be The Sci-Fi Blockbuster Of The Year

Look away if you are one of those people that are concerned about artificial intelligence someday ruling the world.

Hollywood is starting to capitalize on the fear and concern that lies around AI, and when they aren’t trying to replace writers and actors with the computer programming, they are making movies about artificial intelligence taking over. An interesting juxtaposition if you really think about it…

If you happened to see Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning- Part One over the weekend (I did and it was phenomenal), the plot of that movie also revolves around artificial intelligence being the enemy. Studios better strike the iron while it’s hot, because I’m sure like the super hero movies that have been churned out over the past two decades, there could eventually be some “AI fatigue.”

This new movie coming out in September starring John David Washington and everyone’s favorite country-music-singer-turned-actor Sturgill Simpson is called The Creator, and it appears to provide a fresh take on the whole robots versus humans genre. What’s funny is that when The Terminator came out in 1984, people saw it and thought “wow that’s crazy, but that will never happen.”

Nowadays, living in times of pandemics, aliens, and the brink of World War III, people will see this trailer and think “wow that’s crazy, and that will probably happen.”

The premise of the movie is explained below, and it seems great and all, but I’m really focused on the fact that Sturgill Simpson keeps acting his ass off.

For those keeping score at home, this will be his sixth acting gig since 2020, and his second film coming out this year with the other being the highly anticipated Killers of the Flower Moon.

Rotten Tomatoes provides the synopsis for the upcoming film, saying:

“Joshua (John David Washington, “Tenet”), a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife (Gemma Chan, “Eternals”), is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war… and mankind itself.

Joshua and his team of elite operatives journey across enemy lines, into the dark heart of AI-occupied territory… only to discover the world-ending weapon he’s been instructed to destroy is an AI in the form of a young child (newcomer Madeleine Yuna Voyles).”

The premise of the movie is intriguing for sure, especially in the age of everything being either a remake or a sequel (or a prequel where all the actors are 20 years older and we are supposed to suspend disbelief as an audience).

The Creator looks to be a somewhat original idea, and with Sturgill Simpson in a supporting role, his built in fanbase will without a doubt head to the theaters to see it.

Would I rather hear him put out some new music that would blow my mind? Probably so, but at least we all get to still see him in some form or fashion rather than him just disappearing into the shadows.

Simpson plays the character Drew (or maybe Shipley, there are conflicting reports on the casting) in the film, who looks to be fighting along the main character played by Tenet‘s John David Washington. You catch a glimpse of him at the 1:20 mark of the video, then I believe again around 1:40. Robbie Tann also stars in the film and he bears a bit of a resemblance to Stu.

Here’s to hoping that an existing song of his, or maybe even a new Sturgill tune, makes it into the movie.
