Unless you’ve been living under a rock, then you’ve probably heard something this week about the OceanGate submarine.

The submarine that was carrying five billionaires and explorers was destined for the Titanic, after each person paid $250,000 to explore the iconic sunken ship.

However, the sub went missing on Sunday, resulting in a massive search that’s gone on all week.

Sadly, the submarine was expected to run out of oxygen today. Earlier, the Coast Guard announced that a debris field had been located by a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) that had been sent down to search for the missing submersible.

With that being said, OceanGate released a statement, announcing that all five crew members have been reported dead after the submersible more than likely imploded:

“We now believe that our CEO Stockton Rush, Shahzada Dawood and his son Sulemon Dawood, Hamish Harding, and Paul-Henri Nargeolet, have sadly been lost.

These men were true explorers who shared a distinct spirit of adventure, and a deep passion for exploring and protecting the world’s oceans. Our hearts are with these five souls and every member of their families during this tragic time. We grieve the loss of life and joy they brought to everyone they knew.

This is an extremely sad time for our dedicated employees who are exhausted and grieving deeply over this loss. The entire OceanGate family is deeply grateful for the countless men and women from multiple organizations of the international community who expedited wide-ranging resources and have worked so very hard on this mission.

We appreciate their commitment to finding these five explorers, and their days and nights of tireless work in support of the crew and their families.

This is a very sad time for the entire explorer community, and for each of the family members of those lost at sea. We respectfully ask that the privacy of these families be respected during this most painful time.”

Although the deaths were announced, I can’t make it one scroll through TikTok without seeing some video about the missing submersible, or the Titanic in general.

However, I came across this one really fascinating story about legendary filmmaker James Cameron, and famed actor Bill Paxton.

Rob Lowe once made an appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, and recalled a wild story that Paxton had told him years back about how Cameron and Paxton literally ate lunch on the deck of the Titanic.

Yes, you read that correctly… the pair took a sub down to the wreckage and had a meal on the sunken deck.

And to make the story even wilder, they were down there when the planes crashed into the Twin Towers on 9/11.

Lowe told Rogan:

“Bill’s like ‘God d*mn Jim’s taking me down to the Titanic, I’m going next Thursday.’

And they went down to the Titanic, they had lunch on the deck of the f*cking Titanic.

And then Bill came up, and everybody was like passion-faced and freaking out because 9/11 had happened… Bill Paxton was on the deck of the Titanic when 9/11 happened, with Jim Cameron. Is that crazy?”

I thought I’d heard some wild stories in my lifetime, but this one might’ve topped them all.

I mean, can you imagine being two and half miles deep in the ocean, coming up hours and hours later, and finding out that there was massive terrorist attack on the United States which resulted in the complete and total destruction of the World Trade Center towers?

Talk about a mind f*ck…
