What year is it again?

CMA Fest rolls on here in Nashville, and so do the surprise appearances during the nightly shows on the main stage at Nissan Stadium.

Last night, Luke Combs brought out his “hero” Vince Gill for a rockin’ duet of “One More Last Chance.”

But Miranda Lambert may have had the biggest surprise of the festival during her performance after being joined onstage by Avril Lavigne – yes, the early 2000s pop punk star – for two songs during her set on Friday night.

The unlikely duo first did a performance of Miranda’s 2005 hit “Kerosene.”

And of course what country festival would be complete in 2023 without a duet of…Avril Lavigne’s 2002 smash hit “Sk8er Boi.”

While the performance was quite the surprise to everybody at Nissan Stadium, maybe it shouldn’t have been: Miranda and Avril have spoken about their friendship in the past, and have even been spotted together before at Miranda’s Nashville bar, Casa Rosa.

Avril has even dipped her toes into some country music before, honoring Shania Twain with a cover of “No One Needs To Know” at last year’s ACM Honors.

So even though it’s obviously not country and I usually complain about pop stars taking over events that are supposed to be about country music…anybody who grew up in the early 2000s can’t help but rock out to “Sk8er Boi” whenever you hear it.
