Happy Monday, y’all.
Today for the Song of the Week, we have a tune by Cody Johnson called “Monday Morning Merle.”
From his 2019 major label debut album Ain’t Nothin’ to It (and his seventh overall record following six self-released projects), the song was written by Bart Butler, Lance Miller, Brad Warren and Brett Warren.
Though it was never released as a single to country radio, this deep cut is easily one of my favorite’s from the album, simply for the clever play on words and the heartbreaking nature of the song itself.
Cody finds himself playing fun, upbeat music from all different genres of music throughout the week, but when Monday rolls around and the realization hits that she’s never coming back, he can only commiserate with Merle and a little “Misery and Gin”:
“And he’s right back to missin’ that girl
Turns up Misery and Gin Here we are again At Monday mornin’ Merle”Nothin’ will fix ya right up like a good old fashioned country song from the Hag…
Turn it up on this fine Monday morning:
