Watching Loretta Lynn & Willie Nelson’s “Lay Me Down” Music Video Brought Me To Tears Today

Willie Nelson country music

Simple, moving, profound, haunting, sad….the first words that come to mind describing the music video for “Lay Me Down,” by Loretta Lynn and Willie Nelson.

But, today it carries more weight.

The Coal Miner’s Daughter, Loretta Lynn, was called home this morning at the age of 90.

During her career, Lynn not only carried a traditional sound of country and influenced the sounds of many artists, but she also pushed boundaries during her time with her charismatic and witty lyrics.

She is an icon to say the least.

Loretta Lynn’s son in law wrote the song which plays with the idea of morality.

With lyrics of:

“This life isn’t fair, it seems
It’s filled with tears and broken dreams
There are no tears where I am bound
And I’ll be at peace when they lay me down

When they lay me down some day
My soul will rise, then fly away
This old world will turn around
I’ll be at peace when they lay down”

It is told from the point of view that the world is not fair and that true peace is only found when you are laid down to rest.

It twists your heart hearing the lyrics known that Lynn is no longer with us.

The video for this song debuted in 2016 and was shot in Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee.

The video shows clips of Lynn and Nelson singly separately and then coming together in the end on stage. It is simple, haunting, and breathtaking the way it is shot.

Knowing that these two had a lot of respect for each other as artists make the lyrics hit even closer to home, and brought tears to my eyes.

Rest in peace, Loretta Lynn… you will never be forgotten.

Watch the behind the scenes of shooting of the video here, too.
