West Virginia University Pays Tribute To John Denver With New “Country Roads” Uniforms

West Virginia football

Look at West Virginia University paying tribute to the late, great John Denver.

We all know the song, and there’s a good chance you’ve sang it at the top of your lungs at a karaoke bar at some point in your life. Or just any bar…

We’re talking about Denver’s 1971 hit, “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” one of the most recognizable country songs of all time.

And of course, the song gives a nod to West Virginia where Denver sings:

“Almost heaven, West Virginia
Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River
Life is old there, older than the trees
Younger than the mountains, growin’ like a breeze

Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama
Take me home, country roads…”

Of course, many argue that Denver is actually singing about Western Virginia based on the geography of lyrics and the fact that John Denver had never even been to West Virginia at the time the song was written:

Nevertheless, John’s cowriters, Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert (who actually wrote most of the song), recalled listening Saturday Night Jamboree, a West Virginia radio broadcast, so they seemed to have the state of West Virginia in mind.

Either way, the song is basically the official anthem of all things West Virginia, and now, West Virginia University is paying homage with their new uniforms.

They’ve officially unveiled their brand new “Country Roads” uniforms for their upcoming rivalry game against Pittsburgh, which has been widely known as the “Backyard Brawl.”

The helmets will feature the state of West Virginia, with the “WV” logo inside of it, along with the state’s notable highway I-79, and a number of other country roads as well that the state is known for.

The game is slated for this Thursday at 7:00 PM at Acrisure Stadium, both home to the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pitt Panthers.

Pitt will enter the game at number 17 in the nation and WVU will be unranked, but whenever you’ve got a rivalry game on your hands, nothing is guaranteed.

Charles Wesley Godwin gonna be JACKED.

Turn it up.
