Whiskey Riff Song Of The Week: “Just Outside Of Austin” By Lukas Nelson And Promise Of The Real

Happy Monday, y’all.

Today for the Song of the Week, we have a tune called “Just Outside of Austin” by Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real.

From his 2017 self-titled album, the track was a solo write by Lukas, and the record peaked at #2 on the U.S. Billboard Top Country Albums chart.

All about enjoying the simple things in life that are all within arms reach at his family ranch right outside of Austin in Luck, Texas, it’s one of my favorite songs of Lukas’, and if you’ve never heard it before, today is your lucky day.

He’s a wordsmith when it comes to painting such specific details in a unique and introspective way:

“I hear the sound of windy leaves
And summer birds and gently flowing
Rivers, creeks and pools up from the spring
The music of the water on the rocks is getting louder
As I walk towards whatever life may bring

Just outside of Austin
High as I’ve ever been
Just outside of Austin
I think I fell in love with you again”

Coincidentally, I’m actually seeing him in concert for the first time this week, so needless to say, I’m pumped. From what I’ve heard, he puts on an incredible live show, so I’m sure this one will sound just as good in person as it does on the studio recording I’ve listened to 1,000 times over.

The music video for the song was actually filmed at the family ranch, and his dad, the great Willie Nelson, even makes a guest appearance to play fireside with his son in the sweet video:

And make sure you check out the acoustic rendition of the tune Lukas did with his dad and brother, Micah, during one of his Quarantunes Sessions back in 2020:
