It’s still hard to fathom the unthinkable tragedy that happened earlier this week at Oxford High School in Oxford, Michigan.
A 15-year-old student stole his father’s newly-purchased Sig Sauger pistol and opened fire on his fellow students, killing four of them and injuring several others.
According to CNN, the student, Ethan Crumbley, has been charged as an adult with terrorism causing death and four counts of first-degree murder, as well as seven counts of assault with intent to murder and 12 counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
One the students who tragically passed away was 16-year-old Tate Myre, a star running back and linebacker for the Oxford Wildcats football team. But more than just a stud athlete, Tate sacrificed his life to save his classmates, reportedly rushing the shooter in an attempt to disarm him.
He was shot in the process and, according to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard, passed away in the back of a squad car as a deputy tried to rush him to the hospital.
“One of our deputies, due to the severity of wounds, loaded up one of the children in his car and sadly, that child died in the car.
One of our employees who was in the 911 center as part of the team taking the emergency calls, had a relative killed. This touches us all personally, deeply and will for a long time.”
Now, Tate’s fellow students have launched a petition to rename the football field after him.
According to the Change.org petition, they’re looking for 150,000 signatures, and more than 100,000 signatures have already been acquired:
“On Tuesday 11/30 at around 1pm there was an active shooter in Oxford High School who killed 4 people and injured many more. One of the students was killed in an attempt to disarm the shooter, this student is Tate Myre.
Tate is not just a hero to his fellow students at Oxford high school but a legend, his act of bravery should be remembered forever and passed down through generations, he put his life in danger to try and help the thousands of other students at Oxford High School.”
Tate recently visited Toledo University on a recruiting trip.
Had a great time at the Toledo game yesterday. Thank you @RickyCicconeUT @ToledoFB for the invite!@ReggieWynns @TheD_Zone pic.twitter.com/VIDhtHWGPG

RIP Tate… you’re a hero.
It is with great grief that one of the victims of the tragic event at OHS today was one of our own, Tate Myre. Tate was on varsity since his freshman year and was an honor student. Tate was a great young man with a bright future and beloved by all. You will be missed, Tate 💙💛 pic.twitter.com/AKJCH1UWBG
