16-Year-Old ‘American Idol’ Contestant Wows Judges With Cover Of Chris Stapleton’s “Midnight Train To Memphis”

Caleb Kennedy first wowed the American Idol judges when he performed an original song all the way back at his audition.

And at just 16-years-old, his songwriting prowess was downright impressive.

Now, vying for a spot in the Top 12, Caleb took the stage for a performance of Chris Stapleton’s full throttle “Midnight Train To Memphis.” And while nobody can compete with Chris himself, the kid is pretty damn good.

Lionel Richie called the performance “brilliant.”

We’ve seen a solid of amount of country music on this season, and not just any country music, we’re talking about the good stuff. Artists like Tyler Childers, Chris Stapleton, Merle Haggard… and most of it is from pretty young artists.

Hopefully, it’s a sign of things to come.
