Eric Church’s “Lynyrd Skynyrd Jones” Is A New Twist On A Southern Rock Classic

Storytelling… that’s what country music is all about.

And Eric’s ode to Lynyrd Skynyrd is a new take on an old favorite.

Penned solely by Casey Beathard, it tells the story of a mixed-race kid whose mom got pregnant at a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert, and in turn, she names him after the band… Lynyrd Skynyrd Jones. And while the boy never met his dad growing up, and his mom won’t talk about it, he seems to have a knack for playing the guitar just like him.

The story hinges on a pretty cool twist ending… I don’t want to spoil it, but you’ll know it when you hear it.

Here’s a taste of the chorus:

“Lynyrd Skynyrd Jones
Hailed from Gadsden, Alabama
Born to carry on
Who his mama was a fan of
Don’t ask me no questions
And I won’t tell you no lies
That’s what she always told him
Right up till the day she died .”
