David Spade is tired of tiptoeing around Christmas.
You’ve probably noticed that, in recent years, the phrase “Happy Holidays” has constantly been pushed as the more appropriate greeting compared to “Merry Christmas.” Why? Well, at some point along the weird timeline that we’re living in, someone decided that saying the words “Merry Christmas” were not inclusive to all people, and that “Happy Holidays” was a better, more inclusive way of ringing in the holiday season.
Never mind the fact that more than 90% of Americans celebrate Christmas…
Though not everyone is in agreement with that, and plenty of people aren’t offended by the words “Merry Christmas,” that’s why you see most companies and organizations opting for “Happy Holidays,” just so no one is left out. And because we live in a time of hypersensitivity (especially from middle age white women), that’s just how things are, and will be for the foreseeable future.
We recently saw comedian Ricky Gervais buck against the trend of moving away from “Merry Christmas,” and now, another comedic actor is in the news for taking a stand on behalf of Christmas. David Spade, who you might know from such classic comedies as Tommy Boy and Grown Ups, does a podcast with fellow SNL alum Dana Carvey called the Fly On The Wall.
In the most recent episode, Spade brought up an anti-Christmas thing that he witnessed, and how it bothered him:
“I will say that Christmas is taking a little bit of a beating lately. It is December and I saw the other day there was a tree-lighting ceremony for the Christmas tree in some dopey mall but it said tree-lighting ceremony, and they were careful not to say the word Christmas during the whole ceremony.
Why? So it’s just a tree?” And you go, I would understand if you said, ‘They’re doing the tree lighting at (whatever mall). You go, ‘OK.’ But to consciously avoid that, then what is the tree for? A December to Remember? Is it a Lexus dealership? Why do we have — for the whole month? Isn’t it for Christmas? I’d say stop that bulls***.”

Hard to disagree with that, am I right?
Dana Carvey went on to say that Christmas is really just an American holiday, and that the religion part of it all isn’t at the forefront (even though Jesus is the reason for the season). But all the comedian was getting at was that other religions aren’t offended by Christmas like many assume, as he stated:
“I’ve never met someone from another religious faith that was upset about a Christmas tree.”
Exactly.
Shoutout to David Spade and Dana Carvey for setting things right with Christmas. It’s a Christmas tree, and there shouldn’t be any shame in calling it that.
