Pushing back on the legendary coach’s statement.
Bill Belichick found himself in the middle of a media firestorm after a disastrous interview on CBS Sunday Morning over the weekend, which is no doubt an uncomfortable position for a guy who has generally shied away from media attention during his legendary coaching career. The 73-year old coach of the University of North Carolina has never really hid the fact that he doesn’t like being in the spotlight, and at times his relationship with the press was downright hostile during his tenure as coach of the New England Patriots.
But now, it seems that Belichick can’t seem to escape the headlines – although most of them aren’t about his football team.
There’s been a ton of attention on his relationship with 24-year old former cheerleader Jordon Hudson, who if you’re bad at math, is 48-years younger than her boyfriend. And while the spotlight on their relationship isn’t necessarily anything new, it’s come under increased scrutiny in the wake of Belichick’s disastrous interview on CBS Sunday Morning this past weekend.
Hudson was, for some reason, also involved to the interview, sitting just off to the side as Belichick spoke with Tony Dokoupil. And during one particularly awkward moment, Hudson quickly spoke up when the interviewer asked the coach how he had met his new girlfriend:
“We’re not talking about this.”
It was an incredibly awkward moment that seemed to catch the interviewer off guard, and when Dokoupil asked about the photos of their relationship that Hudson shared on social media, Belichick didn’t seem interested in discussing that either:
“I’m on some of those social media platforms, but I honestly don’t follow them.”
But as more and more information has come out about what went on behind the scenes, it appears that wasn’t the only time Hudson injected herself into the interview.
According to a report from TMZ, Hudson was the only person who accompanied Belichick to the interview: No PR team, no other staff from UNC, nobody from the publisher of his upcoming book, which he was supposedly there to promote. At one point Hudson reportedly stormed off the set and delayed shooting by 30 minutes, forcing higher-ups at CBS to get involved. And she had apparently interrupted from off camera several times in addition to the one that was shown, forcing producers to try to figure out how to salvage the final product and edit the interview in a way that could be aired on television.
The whole mess has raised a lot of questions on social media, especially after the two have previously said that they met on an airplane and that he signed her college textbook after striking up a conversation. Why not just tell that story if it’s the truth? And if it’s not, how did they REALLY meet?
In a post on her Instagram this morning, the former cheerleader shared an email which was reportedly from Belichick criticizing media coverage of his upcoming book The Art Of Winning: Lessons From My Life In Football.
And today, UNC released a bizarre statement defending Hudson from the criticism she’s received for speaking up and claiming that the network had agreed prior to the interview to focus solely on Belichick’s book during the conversation:
“I agreed to speak with CBS Sunday Morning to promote my new book, ‘The Art of Winning — Lessons from My Life in Football.’ Prior to this interview, I clearly communicated with my publicist at Simon & Schuster that any promotional interviews I participated in would agree to focus solely on the contents of the book. Unfortunately, that expectation was not honored during the interview. I was surprised when unrelated topics were introduced, and I repeatedly expressed to the reporter, Tony Dokoupil, and the producers that I preferred to keep the conversation centered on the book.
After this occurred several times, Jordon, with whom I share both a personal and professional relationship, stepped in to reiterate that point to help refocus the discussion. She was not deflecting any specific question or topic but simply doing her job to ensure the interview stayed on track. Some of the clips make it appear as though we were avoiding the question of how we met, but we have been open about the fact that Jordon and I met on a flight to Palm Beach in 2021.
The final eight-minute segment does not reflect the productive 35-minute conversation we had, which covered a wide range of topics related to my career. Instead, it presents selectively edited clips and stills from just a few minutes of the interview to suggest a false narrative — that Jordon was attempting to control the conversation — which is simply not true.”
Why is the university releasing a statement on their official website to defend Belichick’s girlfriend? Who knows. But after the coach released his statement, CBS fired back and claimed that they never agreed to avoid questions on his personal life:
“When we agreed to speak with Mr. Belichick, it was for a wide-ranging interview. There were no preconditions or limitations to this conversation. This was confirmed repeatedly with his publisher before the interview took place and after it was completed.”
Now, maybe his publisher told CBS that there weren’t any conditions but didn’t tell Belichick? I guess both statements could technically be true if the publisher didn’t properly communicate with both sides. But why would CBS release a statement pushing back if the network was lying about having agreed to limitations on the interview? Seems like it would be pretty easy to prove if they went rogue after having been asked not to ahead of time, and that doesn’t seem like a risk the network would want to take, especially at a time when trust in the media is at an all-time low.
Who knows what the real story is, but it’s bizarre that UNC is releasing a statement on their official channels to defend the 24-year old girlfriend of their football coach.
