Kolby Cooper is BACK with a rockin’ new single.

The Texas native released “Mama” today, his first original release in 2024 (he did share a cover of Little Texas’ “My Love” in February), which falls in line with the sound of singles we heard in 2023 like “Running Away,” “Hello From the Road” and his fan-favorite song “Kill Me.”

Kolby says “Mama” is ultimately about having people in your corner that will fight for you, even if you don’t deserve it, which I think we all need in our daily lives to some extent (even if you’re not a touring musician out on the road with vices quite literally everywhere):

“To me, ‘Mama’ is about always having people in your corner fighting for you and wanting what’s best for you even when you don’t deserve it.”

The song was written by Kolby alongside Andrew Baylis, Michael Whitworth and Geoffrey Warburton, and finds Kolby facing the fact that he knows he needs to change because he can never get enough of that “poison.”

A loved one is encouraging him to quit drinking, and while he might want to change that part of himself, he doesn’t think it’s all that realistic because the thrill of the buzz is so inticing:

“Don’t put that on me, mama
I’ve talked to God before
It feels like he don’t wanna
Hear from me no more
This devil in the bottle
Don’t wanna let me go

There ain’t no holy water
Gonna save my soul
Those prayers you sent through the ceilin’
No, they ain’t worth a heart like mine
God knows my shoulders don’t need the weight of the world tonight
Don’t put that on me, mama”

With an upbeat production and his usual, fiery electric guitar riffs and a catchy beat, “Mama” is the perfect song to blast while out on the boat or driving around with the windows down all summer long.

Kolby most recently released his major label debut album Boy From Anderson County To The Moon in 2022, and released several one-off singles last year, though “Mama” is the start of a new musical era for Kolby that I think fans are more than ready for.

He’s easily one of the hottest names to come out of the Texas scene in recent memory, opening for the likes of Koe Wetzel and Jelly Roll over the last several years. Additionally, Kolby has pretty much been at it since he was fresh out of high school after releasing his first song online around that time, and shortly after an EP called Vo. 1 that got some buzz organically in Texas.

Certainly a name to keep your eye on, Cooper is currently on his own headlining tour, and you can find all updated concert dates on his website.

And make sure you give “Mama” a spin and turn it up to 10…
