And last spring, we got a snippet of the kind of magic that could happen…
Matthew McConaughey’s “We’re Texas” virtual benefit concert raised $7.7 million for winter storm relief in Texas, and featured a ton of stellar performances from George Strait, Miranda Lambert, Parker McCollum, Randy Rogers, Willie Nelson and more.
The show was capped off with an absolute knockout performance from Post Malone, who just so happed to be in the studio with Dwight Yoakam’s band.
And with one of the nastiest curveballs I’ve ever seen in my entire life, Post and company started in on a performance of Brad Paisley’s 2002 hit, “I’m Gonna Miss Her.”
And it was AWESOME.
I mean, I knew Post Malone could do country music, I just didn’t know how much I would love it.
But that wasn’t all…
During the ending credits, Post was back, this time with a boot stomping, jaw dropping cover of Sturgill Simpson’s “You Can Have The Crown.”
Yes, you heard that correctly… Post Malone, with Dwight Yoakam’s band, covering an all-time great Sturgill Simpson classic. And he CRUSHED it.
I’m telling you, we need that Post Malone country album, and we need it bad.
I mean, I just can’t stop watching this damn video…
At this point, it’s pretty well know that Post Malone loves himself some country music.
His Shania Twain love has been well documented, he rocked a Dolly Parton outfit on stage at Bonnaroo, he’s played with with Dwight Yoakam and others, talked about his desire to work with George Strait, and now, we even have Sturgill looking to produce a live instrument Post Malone album.
We recently saw him rocking a Tyler Childers tee on set with Noah Veluzat, and he was also spotted donning a Colter Wall Western Swing & Waltzes and Other Punchy Songs t-shirt in conjunction with his brand new Celebrity World Pong League.
And to top it all off, he’s been hanging out with the very talented Billy Strings.
So yeah, does Post Malone singing country music surprise me? No. But he sounds pretty damn good doin’ it and sure as hell wouldn’t be mad if I got to hear some more.
Sturgill Simpson Says He Wants To Produce A Live Instrument Post Malone Album
Back in April, Sturgill shared a cover from his kitchen, reimagining Post Malone’s “Sunflower” into a bluegrass banger. Only problem was that it was filmed with a potato and Sturgill deleted it.
Still, it got me thinking that a Post/Sturgill bluegrass collaboration would be absolute fire.
Twitter was quick to remind me that Koe Wetzel and Post Malone would be fire as well but that’s a conversation for another time.
But more than that, Sturgill confessed that he and Post sometimes drunk Facetime (love it) and that he would like a to produce a live instrumentation Post Malone album someday.
