Putting the rumors to bed.
Even though Taylor Swift and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce tied the knot back in July, we still don’t know much about the wedding thanks to the secrecy surrounding the high-profile event. We know the guest list included quite a few country stars, including Miranda Lambert, Little Big Town, Maren Morris, Kelsea Ballerini, Brad Paisley, Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney, who seemingly cancelled two of his shows at the Las Vegas Sphere to attend. And we know that Travis Kelce himself even sang at the ceremony, a moment that may eventually lead to the future Hall of Famer releasing his own country album some day…
But as from some leaked photos that reportedly showed the setup inside the lavish Madison Square Garden, we don’t really know much about the ceremony: In fact, the couple even had the $30 million decorations burned after the wedding so they didn’t end up on the black market or in the hands of collectors.
Ahead of the wedding, it was reported that Tim McGraw and Stevie Nicks were set to perform during the ceremony. But during a recent interview with Esquire following his induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame, McGraw revealed that the rumors leading up to the ceremony got it wrong:
“I didn’t perform at her wedding. That was a rumor. Surprise, the internet’s not always correct.”
Of course Taylor and Tim go way back: Not only was he the inspiration (and title) for her first single, but Taylor and Tim have shared the stage multiple times together throughout her career, and Taylor even joined him on the song “Highway Don’t Care” back in 2013 along with Keith Urban.
Since those early days, the two have become close friends, with Tim discussing their relationship during his most recent interview:
“Taylor’s always been close to our family, our girls. She’s been to our house and hung out with our girls. And I mean, she’s a special person and one of the most talented people I’ve ever met.
And I think what I always go back to Taylor is, you know, she’s the biggest artist in the world, but the reason for that is there’s a lot of reasons, but I think the core reason for that is she is a genius songwriter. I think that’s the biggest thing I think that maybe get overlooked sometimes with Taylor, is the way that she writes to connect with her audience is such an incredible thing.
And the way she’s able to span generations with her music. Now you have Swifties who are seven, eight years old who love her ’cause of their mom are bringing ’em to her ’cause they were Swifties when they were 10 years old or something like that.”
And he also praised Taylor for wanting to take ownership of her career from an early age, always wanting to learn more about the music industry as she built her brand:
“Early in her career, you know, of course, her first song, like you’d mentioned, but earlier in her career, we took her out on tour with Faith and I when we were on our Soul2Soul tour and really just her and a guitar, and I think she had one other guitar player with her, just her on stage singing.
And every night we would spend time in the dressing room talking and Faith would talk with her and I would talk with her and we would just, you know, sort of pick each other’s brains.
She’s very smart about wanting to find out as much as she could about the industry and how to go about things and what’s your advice on this? What’s your advice on this? And so we just felt like that she was just a special artist and a special person, and we still feel that way, and we couldn’t be happier for her to find Travis, who’s a cool guy as well.”
It’s clear that the two have a lot of mutual respect for each other, even outside of their friendship.
But apparently Tim wasn’t one of the artists who sang at her wedding. Guess we can put that rumor to rest now.
