Surprise, surprise… Shane Gillis hosting Saturday Night Live has caused an uproar.
And now, actor and producer, Dan Levy, is going viral stirring up the internet by jumping on board the outrage bandwagon.
Gillis is one of the more popular stand-ups of the modern day, and often showcases his comedy in his Netflix show Tires and his podcast – Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast alongside fellow comedian Matt McCusker. At one point, he was even set to be a cast member of Saturday Night Live.
SNL announced Gillis as an official cast member back in 2019, then days later, the comedy show parted ways with him after “offensive” material was uncovered in some of his previous work. Being booted from Saturday Night Live before he even really got there ended up being one of the best things for his career.
Since that wild hiring-and-firing, the comedian has hosted the very show he was fired from three separate times – and most recently this past weekend. Much like his first two hosting gigs, there was a weird vibe between Gillis and the studio audience… especially during the comedian’s monologue.
He’s currently catching some flak for this observational joke he rolled out there to start the show:
“I haven’t been to the gym in so long, I didn’t know women just dress like whores now? Look, I’m sorry, there’s no other way to describe it. Have you seen it? I’ve seen it. You’ve seen the shorts? They’re those neon, like, artificial bait-colored shorts, and the wrinkles go around the cheeks and all combine at the butthole.
And don’t look! You’re not allowed to look. For real, don’t look, because they are filming. I’m in the background of like 10 TikToks right now.”
That’s typical, Shane Gillis stand-up material right there.
The internet quickly honed in on the jokes about what women wear in gyms – according to Shane Gillis – and ran with it. Once again, many online are calling out Saturday Night Live for having the comedian host the show.
And actor Dan Levy took to Instagram to call out Gillis and the long-running comedy show for platforming misogyny:
“Women wearing short shorts at the gym does not make them whores. It makes the men calling them whores misogynists. There’s a difference there. By the way, I’ve seen more men’s nipples at the gym than I’ve ever seen women showing their bodies off. But I’m speechless that something like that can exist on live national television.
And to be perfectly honest, more men need to be standing up in opposition to it because it’s complacency that has created the environment in which women are sexually assaulted and it’s a ‘conversation’ as opposed to a ‘crime.’ This is not a women’s issue, this is an everybody issue.
Because the more that men objectify women in the media, the more that other men see them as objects and treat them as objects. They are not objects. They are superior human beings to men, okay? And I’m sorry if this gets me in trouble with the internet, but f***.”
If Dan Levy didn’t like Shane’s monologue, just wait until he find out that his dad was in American Pie…
I’ll admit that it wasn’t Gillis’ best material. But people getting upset about what he said in his monologue is like clockwork at this point. Every time he hosts, those that dislike Shane cling on to one thing he says and rip him apart. I’m starting to think that SNL keep bringing him back solely for that reason… when he hosts, the comedy show makes headlines. People actually tune in, there’s a million blogs about it the next day, and it’s safe to say, the show does numbers.
Of course, there are plenty of people applauding Dan for speaking out against Shane, and plenty of others telling him to lighten up and not be offended by a stand up comedian doing stand up comedy on a comedy sketch show… nevertheless a heated debate has been sparked and the culture war rages on.
Here’s one of the pre-taped sketches that didn’t seem to upset anyone… at least from what I’ve seen:
