25 years after the tragedy that played out on September 11, 2001, we look back at one of the most important, unifying moments that played out after the attacks that claimed the lives of 2,977 Americans.
It’s a day that the United States of America – and the world – will always remember, and a morning that those who witnessed will never forget. 9/11 is often described as one of the worst days of humanity, but in the aftermath, it was the best of humanity that helped a scared, frightened nation heal.
Though I was too young to truly experience the unity that enveloped America after the attacks, I’ve researched the response by the American people, and it’s touching to see that a country that can’t always agree on everything came together as one, and came together as Americans.
This speech by President George W. Bush at Ground Zero in New York City always gives me chills when I hear it:

George W. Bush, who was the 43rd President of the United States, did a lot to bring the country together following the attacks of September 11. He served two consecutive terms from 2001 to 2009, and now in 2026, a quarter of a century after he stood at Ground Zero and delivered that speech, he’s 80 years old.
And Bush was arguably part of one of the most powerful and moving moments in the history of sports, and America for that matter. Following the national tragedy that took place on September 11th, 2001, the nation was torn, battered, and scared, and citizens were yearning for a sense of normalcy.
A little over a month after the 9/11 attacks, the New York Yankees were hosting a World Series game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, and President Bush was called upon to throw out the first pitch ahead of the matchup in the same city that had been rocked to its core some 50 days before.
There was an increased security presence at Yankee Stadium, both because of the recent events and the fact that George W. Bush was in attendance. In fact, there was so much concern that Bush ended up wearing a bullet-proof vest underneath his FDNY jacket for when he went out onto the field.
With the weight of both the vest on his chest and the world on his shoulders, George W. Bush walked out onto the mound, gave a thumbs up to the raucous New York crowd, and threw an absolutely perfect and patriotic pitch right in the middle of the strike zone. The “USA” chants that broke out afterwards felt almost cathartic.

From the FDNY jacket, to the thumbs up on the mound right before he tossed the baseball right through the strike zone at Yankee Stadium, everything about the moment was absolutely perfect… and helped America heal.
