Fans of the artist formerly known as Sturgill Simpson – now known as Johnny Blue Skies – better get out and see the country star while he’s on his Mutiny For The Masses Tour. He said himself at a recent concert that following this lap around the U.S., Johnny Blue Skies and the Dark Clouds are gonna go away for a while.
Sturgill/Johnny Blue Skies hit the road this past weekend to bring the Mutiny for the Masses Tour to… well, the masses. It’s been a fun year to be a JBS fan, with the rollout of Mutiny After Midnight earlier this year and everything that came with that. Now, faithful and fellow pirates are able to “set sail” and hear Johnny Blue Skies play some of his new, hedonistic disco music live when he stops in a city near them.
During his Austin, Texas stop, which was the first of the entire tour, Simpson did a little crowd work and shared some things about himself. He’s not one to talk to the audience very much during shows (he maybe said one or two things the whole night when I saw him in Nashville last year), but in Austin, he was an open book.
Here’s what he said about his hobbies:
“My hobbies include reading, going fast, f***ing real hard and trolling with d*****bags on Reddit.”
That’s very much on brand and expected for Johnny Blue Skies.
Shortly after that, he called his band “neuro-spicy motherf***ers,” and if you are wondering what that means, it appears to be slang for “neurodivergent.” Again, it seems very much like a descriptive word that JBS would have (and use often) in his everyday vocabulary.
But the thing Sturgill Simpson shared that stood out the most? That would be that he and his band will travel the country on the Mutiny for the Masses Tour… and then go awhile for a while, seemingly without releasing new music or playing more shows:
“This is our third year in a row that we’ve done a big ol’ lap around the United States. We’re gonna go ahead and warn you now, we are gonna take a little break after this one and recharge the batteries and starve your asses. Y’all chose wisely.”
Welp… if you were on the fence about going to see Johnny Blue Skies this go-around, I’d highly reconsider. Feels like if you skip out on the next time “Disco Stu” is near you, you’d have to wait a while for him to come back to town.
