The duo we needed.
Today, Laci Kaye Booth released a song called “The Illusion Of Love” with Lukas Nelson, which they wrote with Ben West. If you’ve never heard much about Laci before, you’re certainly missing out.
She’s been opening shows for Ella Langley this year on Ella’s Dandelion tour, though she’s been making a name for herself in Nashville for years now, and while she had success with her song “Shuffle,” from her 2021 self-titled record several years ago, it was her 2024 record The Loneliest Girl In The World that really showed of her impressive writing chops and incredibly unique voice.
Laci is a huge talent, an artist I’ve had my eye on for a while now and I’ve been waiting for her to really breakout, and this new duet is just another example of her artistry and distinctive sound. “The Illusion Of Love” is part of her forthcoming album Love Ain’t For The Faint Of Heart, which his due out everywhere on September 18th.
It finds her opening with a really cool line about how “the trees are black despite the rain” as she comes to the realization that the love she feels for this person might be different in reality than what she’s dreamed up, as she admits that she’s “lost in the illusion of love”:
“The trees are black despite the rain
I’ve tracked your flight, you’re on the plane
Here you come across the hill
Just like the sun, you always will
You told me straight you would never be there
Something inside me refuses to care
Honesty honestly isn’t enough
This time tell me a lie, reality
Makes me cry somebody help
Me with all my delusion
I swallow the truth but I still taste confusion
I’m lost in the illusion of love”
Of course, you can hear the incredible guitar playing of Lukas throughout the song, which is a beautiful touch and honestly adds a lot to the production. Laci and Lukas are both artists that I can’t figure out why they haven’t completely blown up yet… they’re immensely talented and each have a sound that is all their own and head and shoulders above a lot of the mainstream country coming out right now.
As a fan of both of them, I couldn’t be more excited that they teamed up, and I’m not surprised at all that they delivered such a beautiful song. Laci has released “Pathetic” and “Ethereal Redneck S***” from the album as well, and if you’ve never checked out her music before, she’s definitely one to keep your eye on.
There’s just nothing like a good old fashioned country duet in my humble opinion, and these two are supremely talented so do yourself a favor and check it out:
