Coming to a theater near you in 2027.
This past week during CMA Fest, actor Glen Powell filmed a scene for his forthcoming country music comedy film, The Comeback King, in between Riley Green and Hardy’s Nissan Stadium sets. Powell wrote the script with fellow actor Judd Apatow, and Universal Pictures reportedly fast-tracked the original comedy, and they’ve been able to fill out the cast with some big names.
Cristin Milioti (The Penguin, How I Met Your Mother) and Madelyn Cline (Outer Banks, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story) are also set to star in the movie, and comedian Stavros Halkias has also been attached to the film. He’s set to play the agent of Glen Powell’s character.
And there won’t just be star power on the screen in this upcoming comedy. Of coures, they need some great music to accompany it, and so they’ve brought in two of Nashville’s best songwriters in Lukas Nelson and Ernest. Lukas of course wrote and produced the music for the hit film A Star Is Born starring Bradley Cooper and Lady GaGa, which was an incredible soundtrack, so I have high hopes for this one too.
It sounds like Powell will perform the songs in the film too, as he previously told reporters that he was “warming up the pipes” for his role. Though we don’t know how he’ll sound (more on that in just a bit), or the name of the fictional country star he’ll be playing, we do know that the movie will be titled The Comeback King.
It’s set to hits theaters February 5, 2027:
And they’re currently in the middle of filming, as Powell actually filmed a scene during Riley’s aforementioned CMA Fest set, and People shared the clip on TikTok, where you see Powell in a black cowboy hat and black jacket, telling the crowd they were going to set a record for the “best group chug in all of Nashville history,” before pouring his beer into a cowboy boot for a “Nashville shoey”:
“All right, here’s the plan. We are gonna set a record tonight for the best group chug in all of Nashville history. I forgot a cup so I got to take a boot. This is what we call a Nashville shoey. I’ll see you on the other side, I love you guys.”
After he finished the scene, he broke character and thanked the audience for being part of the movie, telling everyone to look for themselves on the screen when it comes out:
“Thank you guys for being a part of our movie. Look for you guys on the screen. Thank you.”
I’m not sure how many takes they did of this, but it will be cool to see how it translates to the big screen when the movie comes out:
Powell was previously spotted at a Savannah, Georgia dive bar performing “Wagon Wheel,” which is seemingly also for a scene in the movie. The movie is filming mostly in southeast Georgia – specifically in the Claxton, Macon and Savannah areas, and clearly, some in Nashville, too, which makes sense for a country music movie:
