People Are Just Now Realizing That Sam Elliott Was The Voice Of Smokey The Bear For Over A Decade

Sam Elliott

How in the world did people not catch on sooner?

Occasionally, an all-time voice hides behind a cartoon or character and the public never really recognizes it. Need an example? I’ll point you towards the fact that Billy Ray Cyrus sang the theme song for a Scooby Doo movie in 1999, and the internet just figured that last year.

A similar thing is now playing out with the iconic Smokey the Bear character, which is an advertising icon and has been since the campaign was launched in 1944. The U.S. Forest Service rolled out Smokey Bear to help raise awareness for their Wildfire Prevention Campaign, and the character now stands as the longest running PSA campaign in the history of the United States.

The simple phrase “Only You Can Prevent Wildfires” has been uttered across generations, and from 2008 to 2023, a famous mustachioed actor was the voice behind Smokey the Bear.

Yeah, that’s right. Sam Elliott – who starred in 1883 (the Yellowstone prequel) and currently belongs to the cast of Landman (another Taylor Sheridan hit) – and his gravely, instantly recognizable baritone was the voice of Smokey the Bear for over a decade.

Some people are just now finding that out thanks to an interview with Deadline. In it, Elliott was asked if people knew that he was behind the iconic character, and he answered by saying he’s not sure everyone does (now they do). The legendary actor also shared that he and Smokey share the same birthday:

“You know what’s interesting is I’ve been doing that voice for a long time. Not the commercials that they’re doing now. Now he’s very talkative. He’s like everybody today. He’s got something to say. But we were born – I was born – on the same day and year that (the Smokey the Bear) campaign began. On the exact same day… August 9th, 1944.”

Leave it to Sam Elliott to turn the modernization of Smokey the Bear into a perfect critique of modern culture.

If you dive into the replies of that social media post, you’ll see that there are two types of people: those that say they already knew Elliott was behind Smokey the Bear, and those that are absolutely mind-blown by the revelation. I am one of the people that had no idea, and I can relate to most to these replies below:
