It seems like a lot of Marshals will find Kayce Dutton navigating life without his wife, Monica. The show is set to premiere this Sunday, March 1st on CBS, and it of course stars Grimes, better known to Yellowstone fans as Kayce Dutton, in a new chapter after moving on from the Yellowstone Ranch.
The new show should provide fans with everything they want and more in terms of having him back on your screen for an action-packed show. The synopsis of the show’s first season, which will consist of 13-episodes seemingly finds Kayce Dutton got back to his violent ways because of a devastating loss that he suffered:
“With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”
Just in case you haven’t seen any of the trailers… all signs are pointing towards Kayce Dutton joining the U.S. Marshals because he loses his wife, Monica (played by Kelsey Asbille), which many Yellowstone fans are probably happy about because the common complaint about her during the original shows running was how annoying she was due to her victim mentality in many situations. I was kind of indifferent to her, but many fans wanted her killed off in the original show…
Country star Riley Green will appear in multiple episodes, and he will play former Navy SEAL Garrett, who arrives at the ranch, unexpectedly, hoping to lean on his friends Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) and Cal (Logan Marshall-Green) to help “put the demons of his past to rest.”
And during an interview with ExtraTV, Grimes pretty much confirmed that the show will start with the loss of Monica, as many suspected based on the first trailer, and we’ll see how Kayce picks up the pieces and pushes forward, explaining that we find him “at a really low point” that is “worst case scenario”:
“We find him at a really low point. Kind of worst case scenario, actually. Kind of the worst thing that could happen to him has happened, and it’s sort like picking up the pieces and where does he go from there.
I think faced with something like that, you’ve only got a couple of choices, you know. One, you can completely fall apart, and live in despair, or you make a huge change and you keep fighting and you try something new, and he decides to do the ladder.”
Yeah, I think Monica is certainly going to be out of the picture, though how exactly that happens remains to be seen…
Grimes also talked about being hesitant to sign onto Marshals at first because he loved how Kayce’s story ended in the original Yellowstone series, because he got everything he wanted while also managing to get out from under weight of the Dutton name when they finally sell the ranch:
“I was kind of hesitant, you know, because I just loved the way Kayce’s story ended in the original show.
I thought it was the perfect ending, and he got everything he had been fighting for, which is a much simpler life out from under the weight of all these things that have been in his family for years, and he got his life with his family. And clearly, that’s no longer an option when we see him here.”
But considering that there’s so much to Kayce’s background fans never got to learn about in Yellowstone, this new show is a great opportunity to explore Kayce’s background in military special forces specifically, where he worked as a SEAL, which Grimes says we’ll get to learn a whole lot more about throughout this season of Marshals:
“But I thought, in a way, that opens up the world for a lot more story. I meet a lot of fans that would be like, we’d kind of love to go into Kayce’s backstory a little bit with being in the SEALs.
That’s a really cool thing we never really touched on, you know, he’s special operations, and in this show, we get to really dive into that. So that was also something where I was like, that could be a lot of fun.”
That’s also where Riley’s character comes into play as he is plays Garrett, a friend of Kayce’s from when they were SEALs, and Grimes has also commented on how much faster this show will move compared to Yellowstone, which I think all of us will be looking forward to.
I think Kayce was sort of a mysterious character that they glossed over a lot during Yellowstone, so it will be interesting to learn more about him as an individual and his background aside from being John Dutton’s son and always saving the day at the ranch. The military aspect is interesting, the idea of Kayce raising his son Tate without Monica has potential, and surely at some point I imagine they’ll introduce a new love interest for him too.
I’ve missed having the Yellowstone characters on my TV (even though it definitely got rough towards the end), and I will certainly be tuning in for this season of Marshals.
