“Only Thing I Wanted Was Taken From Me”: First Full-Length ‘Marshals’ Trailer All But Confirms A Tragic End For Monica Dutton

The wait for the next chapter of the Dutton legacy is nearly over, but it comes with a devastating price. Paramount+ just released the first full-length trailer for the highly anticipated spinoff, Marshals, and it all but confirms the one thing fans have feared since the flagship’s finale: tragedy has finally destroyed Kayce Dutton’s hard-won peace. Of course Kayce Dutton is no stranger to tragedy, he lost his mother, his father, and both of his brothers… but looking more haunted than ever, Luke Grimes delivers a line that is already chilling fans to the bone: “The only thing I ever wanted was taken from me.”

With a body in a bed, a wellness check, and Kayce slumped over in front of a grave, the first 30 seconds of the brand new trailer suggests a tragic incident at the broken-down ranch that has forced Kayce away from the land and into a life of nomadic justice.

For Yellowstone fans, I think their worst fears may have been realized… Kayce’s wife Monica is dead:

I was thinking that it would be impossible to leave Kelsey Asbille’s Monica out of the show, but now I’m convinced that Kayce Dutton will be forced to father on his own. If that’s the case, I’m sure we’ll find out how that happened in the early portions of Marshals.

The latest teaser trailer also featured Thomas Rainwater and Mo Brings Plenty from the flagship series, but no Monica. Maybe a cameo from a dream is possible but it’s certainly not looking good. I guess we’ll find out how everything shakes out when the first episode of the series on March 1st. CBS has confirmed that the spinoff sequel will premiere in the coveted 8 E.S.T time slot with new episodes of the show airing in same time slot all the way through May – assuming no interruptions or mid-season breaks – until the season finale.

The show’s first season is expected to be 13-episodes long, and the synopsis of the show makes it sound like the series will explore Kayce Dutton’s Navy SEAL skillset in more depth:

“With the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Dutton joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”

And honestly, I’m here for it. RIP Monica, hate to see you go, but let’s get real… what were some of the absolute best parts of Yellowstone? Kayce kicking butts and taking names. Give me running and gunning Kayce Dutton all day long. Rescuing Tate from the neo-Nazis at the end of Season 2? Stopping those attackers from barging into his office and rescuing his father? When he sneaks into that assassin’s car after soccer and puts a gun to his kid’s head… THAT’S the kind of Kayce Dutton I want to watch. That’s the excitement. Do I really want to watch a guy mope about his family and his past, and how hard it is to always be fighting to preserve some sense of normalcy in the state of Montana? Hell no, I want some action. And by the looks of it, that’s exactly what we’re gonna get from Marshals. Bring it on.
