The Seattle Seahawks have some God-fearing men leading their locker room.
Ahead of Super Bowl LX (60), where the Seahawks will be pitted against the New England Patriots with a Lombardi Trophy on the line, Seattle’s head coach and offensive coordinator have been talking a lot about faith. Not faith in their players. Not faith in their play-calling.
Faith in God.
Mike Macdonald, the Seahawks’ head coach, spoke to Sports Spectrum during Super Bowl media availability and said that his faith in God has helped him lead the Seattle team to this moment:
“My faith has really grown over the last couple years. That’s what I lean on. That’s where your strength comes from. Recently I have so much gratitude, and then ultimately strength, that you feel like God has put you in a position to lead these people.
“(Faith) is your guiding light every day, so it’s something that I can hopefully continue to grow, and hopefully our players continue to seek it out – seek their faith and grow in their faith. It’s really special, and we got a lot of guys that are examples for me, too.”
One of those “guys” might actually be his right-hand man: offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak.
He too spoke with Sports Spectrum ahead of the Super Bowl, and Klint was ecstatic when he was asked about his faith in Jesus and how that’s helped him in his life as a football coach:
“This is my favorite question of the night. I’ve learned from many chaplains that I’ve gotten to be around on different teams that your identity is not in your job. Our identity is in Christ, and when I learned that and spent more time in the word from all the mentors I had in coaching that helped me get into Bible studies and read the word every day.
It just, it took a really heavy load off knowing that I’m a child of God. Football is something that I do, but trying to be a good father and being a faithful husband is way more important than any of that.”
Wise words spoken by Klint Kubiak there.
And speaking of wise words, the Sports Spectrum interviewer had an interesting tidbit about how Kubiak gifted Holy Bibles to everyone on the team as a Christmas present. The offensive coordinator thought it was the perfect gift to give during the holiday season, and each coach and player received one.
Klint Kubiak was a little upset that the news of his gift giving got out, but ultimately, he owned it and suggested that there’s not a better gift you can give someone than a Bible:
“That’s the most important thing. I don’t know who told you that… they are totally in trouble now. You’re trying to find Christmas gifts for guys every year to show them that you love them, and what better gift than that?”
So… now it seems like its impossible to root against the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl, does it not?
