Josh Brolin is happy share that Sicario 3 is on the way, and that production on the presumed Taylor Sheridan-written movie is supposed to start sooner rather than later.
Sheridan’s Sicario, which translates to “hitman” in Spanish, hit theaters in 2015, and featured a star-studded cast of Josh Brolin, Emily Blunt, and Benicio del Toro, among others. It was a smash hit… but its follow up, Sicario: Day of the Saldado, didn’t fare as well. Many blame that on the cast shifting around a bit, and Emily Blunt not returning.
But at the end of the day, both scripts were written by the one and only Taylor Sheridan. And it appears that the prolific writer found a way to pump out another script after early reports suggested that Sheridan had a partially written the script for a third Sicario, which would officially make the action thriller based around the drug war a trilogy.
Though it hasn’t been confirmed that Sheridan wrote the script, actor Josh Brolin – who plays a CIA officer named Matt Graver in the film franchise – did tell ScreenRant that Sicario 3 “is happening,” and that production for the third installment of the “covert task force vs. drug cartel” story will be kicking off “soon.”
There’s currently no director attached to the project. One of the film’s producers, Molly Smith, did hint at Christopher McQuarrie (known for his work on the Mission: Impossible movies) possibly taking the role of director for the third Sicario. The first film was directed by Denis Villeneuve, whom Brolin actually went on to work with in Dune and Dune 2. Villeneuve did not return to direct the Sicario sequel (partially because he’s been busy with the Dune trilogy).
So there’s still plenty of question marks with the Sicario “threequel,” with one of those being whether or not Taylor Sheridan carved out the time to write another chapter of the Sicario story (another question would be if the cast outside of Brolin will return). If Sheridan did write up the script for the third edition of what will be known as the Sicario trilogy, it wouldn’t be the only movie that the Yellowstone creator is currently working on.
It was recently announced that Sheridan has actually gotten to work on writing scripts for two different films – Visalia and Capture The Flag – with Andrew Lauren (the producer of The Brutalist) providing original concepts. Visalia will tell the story of a young woman from Cuba risking her life to make it to America, before going back to her homeland.
The other movie, Capture The Flag, isn’t what you might assume it is. It’ll actually explore a space race of sorts, and even seems to take aim at some of the modern billionaires (like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos) who are busy building rockets as side projects. Sheridan also wrote a movie called F.A.S.T. that is set for release in April of 2027, however that script was written over a decade ago.
It all begs the question: Where does he find the time to do it all? It would be both weird and surprising to hear that Sheridan didn’t write the third Sicario, but as he’s gotten busier and busier with his Yellowstone and Paramount+ empires, he has been forced to delegate a bit.
Here’s to hoping that Taylor Sheridan did find some time to pen Sicario 3… because the original was an absolute masterpiece:
