Was There A Mistake In The Cryptic Teasers Shared Ahead Of New “McArthur” Collab?

Finally seeing how all the puzzle pieces fit together…except for one.

HARDY has finally dropped his latest song, the highly-anticipated “McArthur,” a collaboration with Eric Church, Tim McGraw and Morgan Wallen.

The group first revealed the project on Monday with cryptic teasers posted to their social media accounts, each representing a fictional member of the McArthur family along with their birth and death dates:

  • Tim McGraw – John McArthur, born Nov. 2, 1920 and died Nov. 22, 1963
  • Eric Church – Junior McArthur, born Sept. 2, 1945 and died Apr. 4, 1967
  • HARDY – Jones McArthur, born June 5, 1968 and died Jan. 5, 2025
  • Morgan Wallen – Hunter McArthur, born May 13, 1993

Interestingly, all of the original teasers have been deleted from social media.

The information sent fans down a rabbit hole and naturally led many to believe that the song would be about four generations of the same family, but there was a problem: Junior and Jones McArthur couldn’t be father and son, because Jones was born 14 months after Junior passed away.

That left a big question to be answered by the song, but last night when we heard it for the first time it was confirmed that Jones IS in fact the son of Junior McArthur. As Church sings in his verse:

“I’m Junior McArthur and I join my old man
By way of a bullet in Vietnam
Left behind my woman and my boy named Jones
Never got to meet him but he’s carrying on”

So how is that possible? Obviously Junior’s wife was pregnant when he went off to war, but that would be impossible if Jones was born over a year after Junior was killed.

Well one possibility is obviously that Jones isn’t REALLY Junior’s son and that the wife moved on quickly after her husband was killed. But my theory is that there was a mistake in the teasers, and that Junior McArthur’s death date was really April 4, 1968, not 1967.

Many of the birth and death dates listed for the characters line up with historical events, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on John McArthur’s death date or the end of World War II on Junior McArthur’s birth date.

While Junior’s death date DOES line up with the day Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous “Beyond Vietnam” speech in New York City at Riverside Church, which would be symbolic for Junior being killed in the war that MLK was condemning, a far more notable event would occur exactly one year later when King was assassinated in Memphis.

My guess here is that Junior’s death date should have been the date of the MLK assassination, which would have been April 4, 1968 and just two months before Jones was born.

Another possibility is that the death date for Junior IS symbolic of MLK’s speech on the Vietnam War, and it’s Jones who was actually born a year earlier. While his birth date of June 5, 1968 coincides with the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy, a year earlier on June 5, 1967 was the start of the “Six Day War” between Israel and several Arab states.

Or, maybe the gap was intentional and the birth and death dates are meant to be more symbolic than actually lining up with the song. I could just be reading way too much into things, but hey, that’s the fun of music, and the brilliance of a song and teaser campaign like this.

Either way, it’s an incredible song.

McArthur Lyrics

Written by HARDY, Jameson Rodgers, Chase McGill and Josh Thompson

My name’s John McArthur and I work this dirt
‘Til they laid me down in it in my one good shirt
I kept my family fed with a mule and a plow
I’m a whisper in the wind through the pine trees now

And my bloodline it bled on this ground
Soon we all find that’s where we’re bound
And Father Time don’t leave anyone out
When you pass on, what you gonna pass down

I’m Junior McArthur and I join my old man
By way of a bullet in Vietnam
Left behind my woman and my boy named Jones
Never got to meet him but he’s carrying on

My bloodline that bled on this ground
Soon we’ll all find that’s where we’re bound
And Father Time don’t leave anyone out
When you pass on, what you gonna pass down

I’m Jones McArthur and I tried like hell
To teach my son why a man don’t sell
But he came home from college seein’ dollar signs
Didn’t wanna go to work, just wanted me to die

I’m Hunter McArthur and the deal looks good
In 18 months this’ll be a neighborhood
I got a million dollar line I can sign my name on
But there’s a whisper in the pines that’s tellin’ me ‘Don’t’

Sayin’ my bloodline it bled on this ground
Soon we all find that’s where we’re bound
And Father Time don’t leave anyone out
And when you pass on, what you gonna pass down

And when you pass on, what you gonna pass down
Gonna pass down
Gonna pass down
Gonna pass down
