Lan Law’s (The “Country To The Bone” Guys) Cover Of Trace Adkin’s “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk” Is Certainly… Something

It’s not the best cover of “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk” I’ve ever heard, but I suppose it is the worst… probably.

If you’ve never heard of the country music phenomenon that is Lan Law, consider yourself lucky. The duo – made up of brothers Lane and Curtis Lawson – released a country song called “Country to the Bone” in 2024 that was so incredibly bad that it started getting traction online.

It’s like a train wreck that people can’t look away from… check it out:

OOF…

Now, Lan Law has an interesting following online, and they’ve even played some shows around Nashville (small shows, but sold out nonetheless). And to be clear, this isn’t a case where people are laughing with the country music duo. That’s the confusing part. Either Lan Law doesn’t realize that their success is due to people sharing the video as a joke and pointing out how bad it is, or they know that’s exactly what’s happening… and their just trying to capitalize on the opportunity.

Though a song like “Country to the Bone” should have ended Lan Law’s music career before it even got started, they’re persistent, and they are evidently still getting booked for gigs. The country music (?) group recently shared some clips from a show they put on at The Silver Bullet Grill & Bar’s Saloon in Lubbock, Texas.

They treated those in attendance with a raucous performance of their hit song – and presumably only song considering that’s all I ever see them play (they do have a couple of other originals) – “Country To The Bone.” If you disliked the studio version of the track that you got a taste of just a second ago, you are really going to loathe this live version:

At least that couple was able to get a good dance out of it.

What really grabbed my attention though was Lan Law’s cover of Trace Adkins’ “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk” that they played during their set in Lubbock. How can I say this somewhat nicely… they really pushed the boundaries of their vocal and musical range with this cover that, funny enough, the great Jamey Johnson had a part in writing.

Whoever they hired to play with them (sounds like a guitarist and a drummer) were doing their part. What Lane and Curtis Lawson brought to the table for the cover came off as more of a karaoke performance. Actually, I think I’ve heard a drunk bachelorette lay down a better rendition of “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk” than this:

I just… I don’t have any words y’all.

Surely the Lan Law brothers are in on the joke at this point, right? There’s no way they have that many “yes men” and “yes women” around them saying that what they are doing is good. At least that’s very hard to believe. Maybe the joke is on all of us, as we try to wrap our heads around this band that has somehow managed to milk all they can out of a song that’s truly one of the worst that’s ever been recorded.

Then again, when you’re booking gigs and apparently booking distribution deals, you’re kinda… doing it? Country music joke-ception perhaps.
