Georgia Bulldogs Announce Ironic On-Field Sponsor For Upcoming College Football Season

Sometimes the jokes write themselves, and the latest example is the George Bulldogs football program becoming sponsored by… Progressive Insurance.

We’re currently living through an interesting time for college athletics. The advent of NIL seemingly changed the college game forever, and most will say that it transformed the amateur sport into a semi-professional one. Is it for better or for worse? Well, that depends on who you ask.

The college athletes raking in millions of dollars now would probably say it’s for the better.

And one way that universities are bringing in the cash to then feed to and recruit their star players is by increasing sponsorships. Gone are the days where football fields and basketball courts just had the team and conference logos plastered on… in the NIL era, athletic departments are finding room for sponsors.

Which brings us to the news of the University of Georgia partnering with Progressive Insurance for the upcoming college football season. The Bulldogs – along with other colleges like Boise State, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas State, Ole Miss, Oregon, Purdue, SMU, Syracuse, Texas Tech, USC and Wake Forest – will now have an on-field Progressive logo at their home stadium.

Josh Brooks, Georgia’s Director of Athletics, says they are thrilled to welcome Progressive (and more importantly, their money) to Sanford Stadium:

“We are proud to be a part of Progressive’s impactful investment in college athletics. As we look for additional revenue streams while maintaining our strong positioning on a national level, this relationship assists in providing the necessary resources for our student-athletes. We are thrilled that Progressive is joining the many outstanding game day traditions at Sanford Stadium.”

Hear that? That’s the sound of college football fans everywhere slapping their knee and quite literally rolling on the floor laughing.

Why is that? I think it’s safe to say that Georgia football being sponsored by a car insurance company is a little ironic, considering the University of Georgia football team has had over 25 players arrested for driving related incidents since January of 2023. That’s astounding. A couple of players getting arrested while behind the wheel? Bad look, but could be drawn up as accidental. 25 players? In basically three years? That’s what you call a real problem.

But maybe it’s a problem that can be slightly alleviated by becoming close friends with Progressive Insurance? It’s a revelation that’s got all of the college football fanatics out there cracking jokes at the expense of the Bulldogs program:
