American Aquarium is one of the greatest independent alt-country bands to ever do it, and they proved it once again this past weekend during an unforgettable night in Charlotte, North Carolina.
One of the hardest working outfits in the business, led by frontman BJ Barham, Raleigh, NC based American Aquarium found themselves in a bit of a pinch with a last minute show cancellation. But that didn’t stop them from making something magical happen.
Heavy rain and hard winds descended upon dozens of cities up and down the East Coast this past weekend, including the coastal city of Wilmington, NC, where American Aquarium was set to play on Saturday at the outdoor Greenfield Lake Amphitheater. Optimistic that they’d still be able to play come show time, the venue ultimately decided it was too risky to proceed, and cancelled the show at 2am Saturday morning as a result.
While most bands would have mailed it in, taken an off day, and headed to the next town, Barham and American Aquarium took matters into their own hands. By 3am, they had a special show booked at The Evening Muse in Charlotte, a few hours drive away from where they were supposed to be playing that night.
Now, for those not familiar with the situation, the original venue in Wilmington they were booked to play has a capacity of 1,300 people. The Evening Muse, on the other hand, is a legendary, intimate listening room that holds closer to 120 people. A special place in American Aquarium lore, The Muse was one of the first music venues that American Aquarium was able to get a gig booked in outside of Raleigh, and they played it frequently in their early years. Barham has returned over the years a handful of times for solo acoustic gigs that inevitably sell out. By 2007, though, the full band had outgrown the venue, and hadn’t been back since. Until Saturday night.
And as the icing on the cake, the band announced that they weren’t going to have a pre-determined setlist for the show, and instead they would be taking requests from the crowd.
Tickets went live that morning, and sold out in a flash, as expected.
Now, as a North Carolinian myself, American Aquarium is one of my favorite bands of all time, and it was evident that just about everyone else in the venue that night was in agreement with me. The pre-show energy was palpable, and as the chatter halted and AA took the stage, it was clear we were in for an all-timer. Sharing this experience with 120 other die-hard fans, singing every word to every song, even the deep cuts you never hear in a typical set, was an experience like no other.
American Aquarium proceeded to play for two and a half ours straight – a full 30 minutes in excess of the expected set time – and crammed 30 songs into a once-in-a-lifetime set that even included a couple of crowd-pleasing ’90s country covers. And it all happened because American Aquarium wouldn’t take no for an answer, and wanted to do something special for their fans instead. Shout out to the team at The Evening Muse for being willing to make it happen, too, and fostering the best environment possible for such a special show.
It was really a had to be there kind of moment, but it was the type of night that reminds you why you latch on to this type of music and chase live shows in the first place – not just for the songs, but for the stories as well. And this one deserved to be told, if for no other reason than to applaud American Aquarium for doing what they do best – going above and beyond for their fans and playing killer concerts.
If you’re curious what the full setlist of fan-requested songs looks like, check it out below. While there aren’t too many videos out there of the specific show this past weekend, I’ve included some live videos of my favorites that they played, albeit from much larger venues.
