Things aren’t looking good for Fox Sports analyst and former NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez.
Over the weekend, Sanchez was arrested after being stabbed in a bizarre altercation in Indianapolis, where the broadcaster was in town to call the game between the Indianapolis Colts and the Las Vegas Raiders.
Initially, it was reported that Sanchez was the victim of a stabbing early Saturday morning, with Fox Sports releasing a statement shortly after the incident:
“Mark Sanchez was injured in Indianapolis on Saturday and is currently recovering in the hospital in stable condition. We are deeply grateful to the medical team for their exceptional care and support. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mark, and we ask that everyone please respect his and his family’s privacy during this time.”
But it quickly became apparent that there was more to the story.
According to FOX59 out of Indiana, the police report stated that Sanchez was initially uncooperative when officers arrived on the scene, and that the altercation may have started when the former NFL quarterback confronted a food delivery driver. The man reported that Sanchez then began threatening and following him before ultimately attacking him.
The delivery driver reportedly tried to use pepper spray, but when that didn’t work he says he defended himself with a knife. The police report noted that both men were injured, with the delivery driver having a significant injury to his face.
And on Saturday afternoon, the Indianapolis police announced that they had arrested the Fox Sports analyst for several charges, including battery with injury, unlawful entry of a motor vehicle and public intoxication, all misdemeanors:
“After further investigation and following consultation with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, IMPD arrested 38-year-old Mark Sanchez for his alleged role in this incident.
Sanchez was arrested at the hospital for battery with injury, unlawful entry of a motor vehicle and public intoxication, all which are misdemeanors.
All involved parties have been identified, and no further individuals are being sought by detectives.
Sanchez is still in the hospital and has not been booked into the Adult Detention Center.
The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will make the final charging decision. An arrest is merely an accusation, and Sanchez should be considered innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
IMPD does not release probable cause affidavits. Those must be obtained from the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office or Marion County Clerk’s Office.”
We’ve since learned more about what happened leading up to Sanchez’s arrest. According to court documents, Sanchez confronted the 69-year old man who had parked his work truck at a loading dock to collect used cooking oil from a restaurant. Video then allegedly shows the former NFL quarterback throwing the man into an alleyway before the victim reportedly attempted to pepper spray Sanchez. When that didn’t work, he pulled out a knife and reportedly stabbed the Fox Sports personality two or three times.
Sanchez reportedly left the scene and was initially uncooperative with police.
The delivery driver, meanwhile, suffered severe injuries in the altercation and was taken to the hospital, where he has since been released. But gruesome photos obtained by Fox 59 show just how bad his injuries were, including a laceration through his cheek.
And this morning, prosecutors announced that they have upgraded the charges against Sanchez to a felony.
In a press conference, Marion Country prosecuting attorney Ryan Mears announced that Sanchez is now facing a felony charge of battery involving serious bodily injury, a level 5 felony in the state of Indiana with a potential sentence of 1-6 years in prison.
Mears emphasized that the investigation is still ongoing and that the charges are not yet final, so it’s still possible that Sanchez could face even more felony charges once everything settles down, but that after seeing the victim’s injuries it was clear that more serious charges needed to be filed. He also emphasized how ridiculous the whole altercation was:
“This was a situation that did not need to occur… We are literally talking about people fighting over a parking space.”
He also revealed that there were multiple surveillance cameras that captured the incident, and that there were already several witnesses who had come forward with information about the altercation.
The whole thing is just bizarre: Why would this successful television personality attack a delivery driver and throw his entire career (and potentially his life) away over where a truck was parked?
It makes no sense, but it’s an incredibly sad situation for the victim. Hopefully he’s able to fully recover from his injuries, and Sanchez can get the help that he clearly needs.
