What a bizarre story…
Earlier today, the internet was flooded with prayers for Fox Sports analyst and former NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez after it was reported that he was the victim of a stabbing last night in Indianapolis.
The former quarterback for the USC Trojans was drafted #5 overall by the New York Jets in 2009 and spent 10 seasons in the league before stepping off the field and into the broadcast booth, first for ESPN and then with Fox Sports since 2021.
Sanchez was in Indianapolis to call the game between the Indianapolis Colts and the Las Vegas Raiders tomorrow, and Fox Sports released a statement announcing that he was in stable condition after it was reported that he had been stabbed:
“Mark Sanchez was injured in Indianapolis on Saturday and is currently recovering in the hospital in stable condition. We are deeply grateful to the medical team for their exceptional care and support. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mark, and we ask that everyone please respect his and his family’s privacy during this time.”
The stabbing reportedly happened last night around 12:30 AM, and was reported in the local news at the time that two people were injured in the incident.
But as more details began to came out, it was reported that Sanchez may have been the aggressor in the situation.
According to FOX59 out of Indiana, the police report stated that Sanchez was initially uncooperative when officers arrived on the scene, and that the altercation may have started when the former NFL quarterback confronted a food delivery driver. The man reported that Sanchez then began threatening and following him before ultimately attacking him.
The delivery driver reportedly tried to use pepper spray, but when that didn’t work he says he defended himself with a knife. The police report noted that both men were injured, with the delivery driver having a significant injury to his face.
And this afternoon, the Indianapolis police announced that they had arrested the Fox Sports analyst for several charges, including battery with injury, unlawful entry of a motor vehicle and public intoxication, all misdemeanors:
“After further investigation and following consultation with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, IMPD arrested 38-year-old Mark Sanchez for his alleged role in this incident.
Sanchez was arrested at the hospital for battery with injury, unlawful entry of a motor vehicle and public intoxication, all which are misdemeanors.
All involved parties have been identified, and no further individuals are being sought by detectives.
Sanchez is still in the hospital and has not been booked into the Adult Detention Center.
The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will make the final charging decision. An arrest is merely an accusation, and Sanchez should be considered innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
IMPD does not release probable cause affidavits. Those must be obtained from the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office or Marion County Clerk’s Office.”
Fox Sports has not yet issued an update on the arrest, although if I had to guess I’d say we won’t be seeing Sanchez on television tomorrow.
