Don’t worry TCU fans, it’s fake.
We’re just a couple weeks away from college football season, so it’s that time of year where everybody’s usually feeling pretty good about their team. I mean, unless you’re a fan of a team like Texas or Ohio State, chances are this is the best you’ll feel about your squad the whole year, and then once the season starts reality sets in and your mental health depends on how a group of 18-21 year olds play on Saturdays.
At least that’s how it is for me.
But TCU fans got a scare recently, and probably started questioning their team before the season even started, when a post started going around claiming to be from starting quarterback Josh Hoover about attending a furry convention.
Now, if you’re not familiar with the whole “furry” lifestyle, let me explain. “Furries” are people who like to dress up in elaborate animal costumes. I’m honestly not sure if it’s a sexual thing or not, though they always say it’s not. But they have entire furry conventions and meetups and stuff like that. It’s weird.
But anyway, the post purporting to be from Hoover’s IG showed a group of furries at a convention:
And of course, the internet ran wild after Hoover was supposedly the first college football player to come out as a furry:

Luckily for Horned Frogs fans, the Instagram post from Hoover is fake.
The original photo came from a Reddit post in the r/furry subreddit (don’t bother checking it out, I did and it’s a weird place) that was originally posted a month ago.
It seems that a lot of the posts about Hoover being a furry are coming from fans of rival schools like SMU and Baylor, as well as the Horned Frogs’ week 1 opponent UNC, so maybe this is their way of getting in their opponents’ heads during the offseason. Maybe they’re just bored and wanted to start a rumor about the opposing QB. Who knows.
And listen, I didn’t reach out to Hoover for comment so I can’t say for 100% certainty that he’s NOT a furry. But I can confirm that the Instagram post going around right now is fake.
Honestly though, I’m a big fan of this kind of trolling. Sure, throwing sex toys at WNBA games is funny, but starting a rumor that your opponent’s star player is a weirdo and getting the entire internet to fall for it is kinda hilarious, especially since it’s pretty harmless.
But regardless of whether it’s true or not, you just KNOW that Hoover is going to get all kinds of furry jokes thrown his way when he’s on the road. And that seems like the whole point of the post.
