Pot, meet kettle.
The story of this NFL Draft was undoubtedly about Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders waiting days for his name to be called in the 2025 draft. He ultimately went 144th overall to the Cleveland Browns on Saturday, so yeah… not sure if it was worth the wait, but compared to where he was projected to go before this weekend, it’s a steal for the Browns who are certainly in need of a talented quarterback. So much so, they drafted two…
Despite only leading the Buffaloes to a 13-11 record in his two seasons at the helm, many saw his skillset and potential to be very alluring for NFL teams in need of a quarterback and he was projected to go much, much higher. Many can only figure that part of the reason he fell so far probably had to do with the news that came out about his formal interviews ahead of the NFL Draft.
According to one assistant coach, Sanders had what he calls “the worst formal interview” he’d ever seen in his life, and gave some other critical thoughts:
“He’s so entitled. He takes unnecessary sacks. He never plays on time. He has horrible body language. He blames teammates. … But the biggest thing is, he’s not that good.”
Another anonymous exec from an AFC team also had some scathing criticism of the QB and his attitude:
“It didn’t go great in our interview. He wants to dictate what he’s going to do and what’s best for him. He makes you feel small.”
That news came out days before the first round of the NFL Draft, which signaled to many football experts and fans that Shedeur Sanders might not go during the first day of the draft. So Sanders – along with his family and friends – sat in his specially made draft room and watched as dozens of other players (and a plethora of other QBs) were taken before him.
Of course, it’s all speculation, but it does beg the question what really happened behind closed doors that caused his draft stock to drop so low? NFL teams absolutely want to win and will draft anyone they think can help them do that. They often look the other way on any number of off-the-field-issues if you can ball. Simple as that. We heard everything from racism to collusion over the past few days, but it’s obvious that there is something on tape or in the meetings that tanked his draft stock. Or maybe, he just isn’t “that guy,” like Mel Kiper and others thought.
Most likely, scouts just didn’t like the tape enough to risk a high pick on him, but in a notoriously weak QB class, that probably doesn’t bode well for his NFL career.
I have to imagine the attitude of both him and his father, legendary NFL player Deion Sanders, might’ve had a lot to do with hurting his draft stock, and a former flashy NFL quarterback had a lot to say about his attitude as well. Cam Newton, who played quarterback for the Carolina Panthers for nine seasons, let Shedeur have it on his podcast a while back about his attitude, among other things. If you’re unfamiliar with Cam, then that probably doesn’t sound too crazy, but Cam certainly had a reputation in Charlotte and was known to have an attitude himself sometimes. He was a flashy dresser and had an extremely outgoing personality, which could be fun… when they were winning. But it usually felt off key, at best, when they weren’t doing too hot, and rubbed many people the wrong way. He was quite a polarizing figure, which is why this interview is once again going viral.
Cam and Shedeur had some beef a little while back after they met and Shedeur kind of blew Cam off and said he was “weird” to his face (I’ll admit, that’s funny) which led to Cam speaking about it publicly on his podcast (he at one point recently also said Shedeur would go Top 5, so I think he believe he’s a good player in terms of his physical abilities). A video on TikTok has resurfaced of Cam talking about Shedeur during last football season, which feels more relevant than ever after all of the aforementioned draft drama.
Cam basically says that Shedeur is too cocky and that he basically gets in his own way:
“Shedeur, like, first off, I’ve got to hold you accountable. Travis Hunter is what we would think Shedeur is supposed to be. Travis Hunter is polished like a quarterback. Shedeur has always got this mean mug look on his face… snobbish looking, you know what I’m saying? I’ve met Shedeur multiple times… he’s always in character, like ‘I’ve got to pretend like I’m hard. What win, like what performance, can you hang your hat on in college?”
That comment about Shedeur not having any huge wins in college was a common criticism leading up to the draft, and you can watch the video, which has gained a ton of attention online the past couple days, here:
🚨WOW: CAM NEWTON GOES OFF ON SHEDEUR SANDERS FOR BEING TO COCKY.
“Shedeur I got to hold him accountable. Shedeur has always got this mean look on his face, like he always is. Snobbish looking, you know what I’m saying?“

As you can imagine, fans were quick to point out the hypocrisy here, and it is funny to hear Cam Newton call someone else “cocky” because like I said, that was his reputation for many years, which some loved and some hated:
“Why is Cam acting like he isn’t the same way?”
“People in glass houses, Cam.”
“Cam’s just jealous Shedeur’s mean mug game is stronger than his outfit choices at the Met Gala.”
“Oh Lord, here we go.”
“Says the guys who looks like he flies a hot air balloon to work.”
“Cam looking at himself in the mirror.”
“Has Cam looked in the mirror?”
“He really isn’t wrong though.”
“Cam has forgotten how the NFL was putting him on Blast before his draft day. They called him cocky also. They did everything they could to also reduce Cam’s stock. Apparently a media job give you amnesia.”
“Cam just mad Shedeur checked him for acting weird.”
“Pot/kettle.”
“Listen, if Cam Newton is saying your too cocky, your far too cocky.”
“Na not from you. Anybody else but you.”
“Says the guy who wears postgame suits like he’s at the Grammys.”
“Cam is specifically qualified to speak on this.”
“This dude is pathetic. Small D energy for a once great player. Mad because Shedeur ignored him at an event after he criticized him. Superman has become Mermaid Man from SpongeBob.”
“Literally the pot calling the kettle black.”
“For once you know what you’re talking about haha.”
The obvious difference if we’re talking accolades is that Cam did win the Heisman, a national championship in college, Offensive Rookie of the Year and an MVP award in the NFL, though he did kinda blow it in the Super Bowl… don’t get me started.
Either way, I tend to agree with what Cam is saying, but it’s also pretty rich coming from him.
