Jamey Johnson is the new sheriff in town.
Ella Langley and Riley Green not only had the viral song of the year with their CMA Award-winning hit “You Look Like You Love Me,” but the music video was a cinematic experience in itself as well. The two were decked out in old-timey western saloon attire and delivered a story through the music video, truly bringing the lyrics of the hit song to life. And it didn’t help that Riley Green was in the video, drawing in his fans to see the cowboy in action.
Given that “YLLYLM” was one of Langley’s first commercial country hits, she wanted to find a way to highlight her mentor, Jamey Johnson, in the music video. Johnson happily said yes to the feature, but Langley said in a recent interview with the Country Music Hall of Fame, she was worried he might say no.
“I’ve asked Jamey things and he’s straight up said ‘No.’ I called him and said, ‘Hey, we are doing the music video for “You Look Like You Love Me,” and I would love if you were in the music video as a sheriff.
And he took his part very seriously. He cared very much about every little detail of where the gun was getting pulled out, how he was walking out. I don’t think I had to do that much convincing.”
The Country Music Hall of Fame then asked Johnson if he was game to be in the music video, or if Langley had to do some convincing, and he said that he was “giddy” about being offered a role in the video.
“I was giddy about it, and I still am. I’m glad they found something for me to do in that video. I love Ella, and I love Riley, and that song.”
If you weren’t aware that Johnson starred as the town sheriff in the video, you can now watch it again, knowing the outlaw legend is featured in it. Ella Langley and Jamey Johnson’s costumes from the “YLLYLM” music video are being featured in the Hall of Fame’s exhibit “American Currents: The State of Country Music.” Langley noted that it’s an honor to be chosen for this exhibit, and it’s neat to have Johnson’s costume on display alongside hers.
“Just being a part of this exhibit in the first place is… insane. But to have him be a part of it just adds this whole other layer. Just wow.”
