This breakup version.
Of course, Shania Twain scored a huge hit with her song “You’re Still the One” in 1997, which was included on her studio album Come On Over and written alongside her then-husband and producer Robert John “Mutt” Lange. The lyrics were inspired by criticism of of their relationship in the media, though they did ultimately divorce in 2010.
Still, the piano-driven ballad became a hit and shot to #1 on the U.S. Hot Country Songs chart, and is a wedding staple in terms of couples using it for their first dance. Regardless of how the relationship ultimately ended, it’s still a beautiful song that remains a fan-favorite to this day, even if it does feel a little bit more like a fantasy than a reality for many people.
And an artist on TikTok named Kristy Lee did us all a favor and turned it into a heartbreaker, and the video has gone viral and now has over three million views on the platform. She rewrote the lyrics as a woman who had her heart broken, completely flipping the script on the original and it’s actually really good:
“We couldn’t make it,
Is this how far we’ve come to waste it?
Guess we took the wrong way
Never knew we’d get here someday
They said don’t let this make me jaded
So just here I am holding on
Still without you, still trying to be strong,
I guess you’re not the one
You’re not the one I run to
You’re just someone I outgrew
You’d rather win than make it right
I guess you’re not the one”
Shania even left a comment on the video, seemingly just as impressed as everyone else, saying:
“Oh wow!”

Yeah, it’ll hit you where it hurts…
Many fans in the comments seemed to relate to the reality of this version, noting how personal it felt, especially because so many have a personal connection to Shania’s original:
“Shania’s ‘You’re Still The One’ was my wedding song. I’m now divorced and I need this to be my divorce song.”
“This was our first dance. Divorce will be finalized soon. This hits.”
“‘You’re not the one I run to, you’re just someone I outgrew’ HIT HARD.”
“It’s harder when this was your wedding song.”
“‘Is this how far we’ve come to waste it’ I beg your finest pardon.”
“The version we didn’t know we needed!!!!!! Ty!!”
“‘You’re Still The One’ meant something to me in 2019… now it’s hard to listen to.”
“Now I need a full version to cry on his weeding day.”
“Not you remixing a perfect relationship to a failed one….It’s the modern reality though.”
“The original was my wedding song. Now going through a divorce, this version makes more sense. Thank You.”
“So how do I send this to him, without sending this to him?”
“Finally found the right song for my ex.”
“I love how the lyrics was reversed into reality.”
“Love your version, these lyrics are amazing.”
“I want this on Spotify.”
I’m a sucker for a good country heartbreaker, but this is still a classic…
