Morgan Wallen is opening up about his son.
Earlier this week, Morgan sat down with Theo Von on his This Past Weekend podcast, and his personality flipped 180 degrees from his Saturday Night Live appearance, when he walked off during the show’s send-offs. During Von’s interview, the two laughed and cracked jokes, and Wallen shared many aspects of his own personal life.
One part he opened up about was his son, Indigo Wilder, whom he had with his ex, KT Smith.
Wallen shared a snippet of “Superman,” a song from his forthcoming album I’m The Problem, on Instagram, which his son inspired.
“Been trying for a long time to write a song I loved to my son. None of them ever feel good enough because of how perfect I want something like this to be. And not saying this is perfect, but I am very proud of it. Here is a clip; It’s called ‘Superman.’”
The song vulnerably shared Wallen’s viewpoint that he knows he’s not a perfect man. As Indigo grows up, he will see all of his wrongdoings online, and he just hopes that Indigo still sees him as “Superman.”
“One day you’re gonna see my mug shot
From a night where I got a little too drunk
Hear a song about a girl that I lost,
From the times where I just wouldn’t grow up
And when you ain’t a kid no more
I hope you don’t think less of me
I try to hide my falling short
But you’re gonna see
Now and then that bottle’s my crib tonight
Brings a man still down to his knees
Don’t always know my wrong from right
Sometimes, I’m my own worst enemy
No, I don’t always save the day
But you know for you I’ll always try
I do the best I can
But Superman’s just a man sometimes.”
Von and Wallen touched on the importance of this song during his interview, but what I enjoyed more was hearing Wallen talk about his four-and-a-half-year-old and how much he loves seeing him grow up. Wallen opened up that, just like most dads, he’s always thought that his son was cool, but now, as he sees his personality develop, he loves his son even more.
“I mean, it’s always been cool, but you know. He’s 4 years old now, he’ll be 5 this year. Just a personality that keeps coming out and the relationship that you build. He’s got a little sass on him. He’s got a little attitude, you know, which I like. I like that spunk.”
Wallen then shared a prime example of Indigo’s “spunk” showing.
“Yesterday, my dad was telling him — he was trying to get him to eat. It’s kind of a task to get him to eat, to sit still long enough to eat. And my dad was like, ‘Hey man, if you don’t eat, I’m going to put you in the bedroom and you’re going to go to sleep,’ or whatever. I don’t know exactly what my dad said to him.
But he looked at my dad and he said, ‘I don’t want you to stay here anymore.’ I mean, it’s just like hilarious, you know?”
It sounds like Indigo might have a little bit of his dad’s personality in him. He is quick-witted and does things his own way. Hopefully, Indigo learns from his father’s mistakes, though, and doesn’t follow in his footsteps with those actions, but it would be cool to see Indigo follow in his dad’s footsteps musically. I bet he inherited some of those genes.
Maybe one day we will see Wallen bring Indigo on stage with him, like Ernest has done with his son Ryman or Randy Houser with his son.
Even if we don’t, you can tell during this podcast segment that Morgan Wallen is a very proud father.
