Oh, folks would have loved this in a medieval tavern.
I always find it entertaining when folks put their own spin on a classic tune or if they perform it on an instrument that is not in the original composition. However, I must admit that I was not expecting to be so in love with a song performed on a lute. And to be honest, I was unfamiliar with a lute until I encountered this creator’s account. I knew the guitar-like instrument was what the Robin Hood Rooster strummed as he whistled the theme song, “Whistle Stop,” but that was about it.
The Robin Hood soundtrack was composed by the legendary Roger Miller, and I have to say, it’s pretty stellar:
However, Dan on the Guitar, a TikTok user, is showing that the Renaissance instrument can crank out some modern heaters.
According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, a lute is:
“A plucked stringed musical instrument popular in the 16th and 17th centuries. The lute that was prominent in European popular art and music of the Renaissance and Baroque periods originated as the Arab ūd.”
This TikTok creator got his hands on one of the old-time instruments and has been laying down heaters on it. One of the first videos he posted as part of his lute series is a cover of Josh Turner’s “Your Man.” And much to my surprise, it just works.
@danontheguitar Lute is pretty much a ye olde 12 string with an extra string #joshturner #yourman #countrymusic #lute #fyp ♬ Your Man – Josh Turner
After that initial video, Dan created a fictional tavern where he takes song requests from his audience, letting them know it would have been at a tavern back in the 1400s and 1500s.
Out of his sixteen-episode series thus far, he’s covered artists like The Eagles, John Mayer, AD/DC, Dire Straits, and one that really took off among viewers, Lynyrd Skynyrd. Yes, Dan delivered one of the most epic guitar solos laying down “Free Bird” on the lute.
To say these rips are an understatement. This is the most epic guitar solo cover of “Free Bird” I have ever witnessed. The tinge of the lute works so well with the existing chords, giving it a whole new sound without changing the composition.
“Free Bird” would have gone so hard back then… or “Free Bard,” rather.
@danontheguitar Replying to @Tyler is hot Ngl I really want to go to whatever local tavern I’m making up #freebird #lynyrdskynyrd #lute #fyp ♬ original sound – Hi I’m Dan
Many users felt that this lute cover would be a perfect fit for a Shrek film, and I totally see it. Imagine a bar fight between Donkey and Shrek as they open a can of whoop a** on their enemy. It would be legendary.
Check out some of my favorite comments left on the post:
“Free Bard.”
“Brethren, chill; my maiden is in this establishment.”
“Bumping this in the carriage, leaving the tavern after my 12th ale.”
“Bard rolling Nat 20 during a bar fight, everyone’s getting inspired.”
“This bar fight would be magnificent.”
“If you pulled this out at the tavern, you’d be accused of witchcraft.”
“I spit out my mead.”
“I feel like someone shredding ‘Free Bird’ on a lute would be a scene in Shrek.”
“Spare some maidens for the rest of us, young fellow.”
“My lord, this melody is absolutely unequivocally bussing.”
“Crazy to think that the lute has been around for centuries and any bard could have just cooked up that solo in some old-timey tavern at literally anytime, but they never did.”
“So sick with it woulda been accused of witchcraft fosho.”
“If you went back in time and played this, you would blow everyone’s minds and get all the fair maidens.”
“There’s no proof this DIDN’T happen in ye olden times.”
Dan has noted in his profile bio that if he gets 100k followers, he will “play ‘Freebird’ on the didgeridoo.” Now that’s something I want to see…
But I suppose this “children’s toy” will have to do for the time being:
