Idaho Skier Accidentally Kills Deer In Collision, Skis Down The Mountain With Carcass On His Back To Harvest The Meat

Killing two birds with one stone.

Have you ever wanted to take a skiing trip, but knew that by doing so, you’d miss out on some quality deer hunting? What if I told you that you could actually do both at the same time? Don’t believe me? Well allow me to direct your attention to this wild video from a couple of years back that definitely deserves to be revisited (and is going viral once again). It proves that the act of multitasking deer hunting and skiing is very much possible.

Professional skiers Karl Fostvedt and Wing Tai Barrymore were having a fun day shredding powder in Sun Valley, Idaho with their friend Harlan, when a group of deer ran out amongst those skiing down the slope. Harlan did his best to avoid the animals, but ultimately failed in doing so and struck one of the deer – instantly killing it.

When the incident first took place, this was the message that was shared alongside the picture of the dead deer resting in the snow:

“Still can’t believe Harlan hit a deer while skiing at Sun Valley last weekend. Harlan was watching a couple other deer run across the slope when this little guy popped out of nowhere right in front of him. Harlan said he heard the deer’s neck snap as they collided. Talk about a super sad sequence of events. Thankfully Harlan is a beast and was able to walk/ski way from the collision.”

Yeah… about that.

Harlan was able to walk/ski away virtually unharmed from the accident, which is somewhat of a miracle if you ask me. Not only did he continue skiing down the slope… he took the deceased deer with him. Harlan threw the animal over his shoulders and proceeded to ski down the mountain – both so they could turn the deer over to ski patrol and so it wasn’t an obstacle in the way of fellow skiers.

Needless to say, it was a badass move:

Yeah that might be the coolest thing I’ve ever seen in my life.

According to the rest of the story, the entire deer was harvested for meat, so it didn’t die in vein. It did – however – suffer a death-by-skier. The deer apparently went quickly, though I can’t imagine that’s the way to go if you are a deer.

Here’s the post from Harlan himself explaining how fortunate (and sore) he felt after the collision:

“Man, what a crazy accident! Feeling super lucky to ski away from it. (Except being incredibly sore for two days.) Super sad to watch this guy die in front of us, but his life is being celebrated Apples Bar & Grill this Dec 3rd at 6:30pm with some skiers stew.

Hopefully it’s the sacrifice and party we need to bring on some snow! Cheers to everyone for being so appreciative and understanding for the way I handled this wild situation.”

Truly a wild story. If you happen to be hitting the slopes sometime soon, make sure you keep your head on a swivel. Deer evidently like running out in front of things traveling at high speeds and getting hit by them…
