Colter Wall is as country as it gets.
His unique voice may not be what you associate with the sound of the genre’s yesteryear, but through his authentic songwriting and steel-soaked, honky tonk band he’s sure carrying on the tradition. And the best part is that he lives it, it’s not some sort of gimmicky act.
The Canadian cowboy known for singing songs about the Western lifestyle spends most of his time working his ranch as opposed to out on the road touring, and that’s where a recent video of him crooning a country music classic transpired. Filmed and posted by Dusty Vaquero, the content creating arm of The Lost Cowboy author J.B Zielke, “where day working cowboys meet starving musicians,” Wall sits beside his mandolin-picking ranch neighbor Craig Dumontel for an intimate rendition of “I Never Go Around No Mirrors.”
In the description of the YouTube video, Dusty Vaquero set the scene of how this impromptu video came to be.
“We met up with Colter at his home in Saskatchewan, fresh off a few long days of riding the big fall round up. Heavy rain blew in and confined us to the horse barn where quickly an impromptu jam session broke out.
Sitting atop old feed buckets, saddle stands and an old buckboard seat we gathered around. Songs old and brand new rang out through that barn while the rain soaked the parched prairie outside.”
So, without further ado, watch Colter Wall play “I Never Go Around Mirrors” live from his horse barn.
“I Never Go Around Mirrors” was originally recorded in 1973 by the legendary Lefty Frizzell, who had written it alongside fellow country musician Whitey Shaver. Recorded by a who’s who of artists including Darryl Singletary, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Merle Haggard over the years, the most popular recording of the song was released in 1988 by Keith Whitley on his sophomore record Don’t Close Your Eyes.
Give both Frizzell and Whitley’s versions a listen, too.
