Smoother than butter.
Last night, several country artists appeared at the Von Braun Center Propst Arena in Huntsville, Alabama, to honor the great songwriter Dean Dillon as part of a tribute show called Songs and Stories of Dean Dillon.
He is one of the most legendary writers in country music, and has tons of credits on songs for the likes of Toby Keith, Keith Whitley, Kenny Chesney, David Allan Coe (“Tennessee Whiskey,” if you’ve heard of it…), Brooks & Dunn, Alabama, and others, but is best known for his work with The King, George Strait.
And he also penned The King’s 10th #1 hit “Ocean Front Property,” which peaked at the top of the Billboard U.S. Hot Country Songs chart in 1986, and has since been certified Gold by the RIAA.
Written by the great Dean Dillon, Hank Cochran and Royce Porter, the song was released in December of 1986 as the lead single and title track from his 1987 album of the same name. It’s so clever and well-written, as the narrator describes how, in the wake of a breakup, he’ll never miss his ex or ever want to get back together with her.
But in reality, as he admits later, the likelihood of him moving on is about as good as the chances of finding an “ocean front property” in landlocked Arizona. Dean has mentioned before that it’s not his favorite, but Riley Green treated to the crowd of a cover of it and I can’t get enough.
I don’t know if I’ve ever actually heard Riley sing a real deal Strait cover before, but Lord knows I needed to hear it…
