This good boy put his life on the line to protect his owner when a black bear was lurking nearby.
Bailey Jacobson, a Minnesota resident, was outside in her own driveway with her dog, Zeus, when an unexpected animal encounter occurred. The homeowner had no idea that a black bear was mere feet away digging through her garbage. Her four-legged friend, on the other hand, was all over it as soon as it walked outside and caught a glimpse of the beast.
Which brings me to this observation: I’ll never understand the type of people that don’t like having pets. Sure, your house probably stays clean more easily, and you can leave your home for long periods of time and not worry about boarding or finding a dog-sitter, and you probably save money not having to pay for vet bills and pet food…okay, I’m gonna go ahead and stop there.
What I was really trying to say is that this situation could have played out a whole lot differently if it weren’t for the brave dog accompanying this woman. Clearly she had no idea the bear was in her immediate proximity until her dog alerted her. And not only did he make the situation be known… Zeus took everything into his own paws.
The dog first ran over to confront the bear. When the two were close (but still couldn’t be seen by the security camera this video was captured on), the bear evidently became aggressive, and the dog knew exactly what it had to do next. Instead of running back towards his owner, Zeus ran in the opposite direction – down the road – and lured the bear away from the house, and thus, Bailey Jacobson.
It was a real super hero move, and it could have very well saved Jacobson’s life. Sure, the black bear could have seen the woman and fled. But if it was in chase mode going after the dog that had initiated the incident, who knows what could have happened. The dog’s quick decision making was impressive, and ultimately kept everyone safe.
Jacobson confirmed that both she and Zeus were ultimately okay following this close call. The dog eventually came back after leading the black bear away from the home, and I’m sure the homeowner breathed a sigh of relief when her furry friend returned to the house safe and sound. Jacobson can also go forth knowing that she’s got a dog by her side that somehow knows how to perfectly handle and distract apex predators.
Zeus’ heroics saved the day, and it was all caught on camera. You can see how the dog acted as bait to keep its owner safe in the footage below:
