Just when I thought I had heard it all…
Koe Wetzel was a guest on Dale Brisby’s Rodeo Time Podcast today, where they of course talked about Koe’s forthcoming album 9 Lives, some of his hunting adventures and much more, but easily the best part was hearing Koe talk about meeting Kid Rock.
He was in Nashville with his band for a few days rehearsing for the new tour, and as Koe puts it, he was very, very drunk (and had been for a few days at this point), and obviously, knew that part was only going to get worse:
“I met him one time at his house… we had been in Nashville for like two or three days, we were rehearsing for the new tour. Every time I go to Nashville, it’s like you get to meet up with all your old buddies, people you hadn’t seen in a while.
So we were out, stayed out all night, get to rehearsal, drink all day at rehearsal, running on hardly any sleep. And Bones Owens… one of my good buddies out of Nashville, he’s next door neighbors to Bob.
So he was like ‘Dude, Bob’s wanting you to come over and hang out.’ And I was like ‘Man, I’m pretty drunk right now but let’s go, dude.'”
They walked in and Kid Rock AKA Bob Ritchie offered him a drink, though Koe explained that Kid wasn’t really drinking at the time, which also seems like an important detail to the story later on. Koe and his tour manager Dre put down a large handle of Crown Royal (after already being plastered from the rest of the time they had been in Music City), and you can probably see where this is going…
Koe says that he was, simply put, “annihilated”:
“And it goes back to growing up kind of idolizing Kid Rock, you know, just loving everything about him. Finally get to meet him, hang out with him, he treats you just like anybody else. Down-to-earth.
Dude, I get annihilated. I get just out of my mind drunk. I showed my a** so hard, dude. I am out of my mind. And the last thing I remember, they’re trying to get [me to leave], ‘Aright, Koe, you’re getting there a little bit.’
Dre and them were like, maybe we should leave. And I’m like ‘No, f**k that,’ you know?'”
And he definitely should have listened to them, but he wanted to keep hanging out and passing the guitar around with Kid.
Koe explained that the last thing he remembered was wanting to make a $10,000 bet on bowling with Kid (who has an insane mansion obviously complete with a bowling alley), and I guess Kid was ready for Koe to head home because he had a different wager in mind:
“Me and Kid are passing around the guitar and stuff. I think the last think I remember him saying, I was like ‘$10,000.’ He’s got the bowling alley in his house, ‘$10,000, one bowl.’
And he goes, ‘I’ll give you $10,000 to get the f**k out of my house.’ I was like, alright, thank you Mr. Kid, and I’m out.”
YIKES.
Now I’m sure it might’ve had a little humor to it at the time (I honestly couldn’t tell by the way Koe retold it), but Koe also explained that Kid Rock was never really mad about it and Bones had smoothed everything over after a few days.
Also, it doesn’t seem like Koe was too bothered by it himself because he says he loves to tell that story to people now:
“I like to get to tell that story, because people are like, ‘Oh yeah, you and Kid Rock are buddies!’ And I’m like ‘Buddies? Hmm… maybe. We know each other, that’s for sure.'”
If there is one thing about Koe, it’s that he’s always good for a wild story like that. I’d love to hear Mr. Ritchie’s side of the story, though.
You can watch Koe tell it all in the video below, and I’d highly recommend it because my jaw literally dropped when he said that Kid Rock basically kicked him out.
Rockstar sh*t, or something like that, right? My goodness…
Koe’s new album 9 Lives is due out everywhere on July 19th, and he’s gearing up to put out another new song tomorrow called “High Road.”
“Sweet Dreams”
