Gary Stewart’s “She’s Actin’ Single (I’m Drinkin’ Doubles)” is one of my all-time favorite country songs, and I can’t think of someone better suited to cover it. Zach Top is bringing back jukebox jams with his authentic old-timey sound, and he blends his ’90s-influenced sound on the 1975 hit.
During a recent show in Mobile, Alabama, at Soul Kitchen, he and his band threw down a sensational cover of the track. Top keeps the whiny, drawn-out vocals that Stewart was known for and cranked up his pedal steel guitar player’s amp to really transport the crowd back in time.
Hearing this version from Top makes me feel like I am in a dive bar, drowning my sorrows in a glass of whiskey while cigarette smoke fills the air…in the best way possible.
Once Zach hits the chorus, you can’t help but sing along.

I drown my troubles…”
