If I were a betting man (which I am), I’d say were less than 3 years away from a legitimate AI music superstar.
As AI technology continues to move forward at a ferocious pace, there’s just no way I don’t see some record label deciding they don’t want to deal with the headache actual humans cause and reallocate those resources to creating some radio-friendly, computer generated artist that “sings” songs the algorithm likes and places like TikTok eating it up, leading us into a weird future where the superstars of the day will be nothing more than pages of code.
As if it needs to be said, I don’t like that idea but after seeing so many videos of AI in its current, basic form and extrapolating that out by a few years, it’s way more probable than not, in my head at least, that “Big Music” will be moving away from people sooner rather than later.
From Johnny Cash singing “Barbie Girl” to a fake model that sent people into a frenzy, AI is already capable of doing things that just a few years ago seemed impossible, but the latest trend that’s taken over the internet is having characters from TV shows sing popular songs, and this one that’s going viral may just be the best one yet.
A TikTok account called “theaijukebox” has been churning out fake covers for sometime now and just posted one of Hank Hill from the TV series “King Of The Hill” singing Morgan Wallen’s “Last Night” and I have to say, it’s really not that bad.
Granted, I don’t like what this can mean for music moving forward, but you’ve got to call a spade a spade and this particular video is very well done.
Maybe it’s just his iconic voice, maybe it’s the fact that I enjoy this song way more than is comfortable for me to admit, but whatever it is, I’ve listened to this a few times already today and I’ll probably be back for more… Hank didn’t have to go that hard.
