I Completely Forgot Matthew McConaughey Played The Centerfielder In The Movie, ‘Angels In The Outfield’

Matthew McConaughey

Matthew McConaughey might just be the most well-known actor on the planet at the moment.

Hell, the Texan is beloved so much in his home state, he had a solid shot at winning an election for the Governor of Texas (he declined to run, of course).

It ain’t a secret that the guy has had one helluva acting career over the past 33 years, and it’s cool to look at how far he’s come from his Trisha Yearwood “Walkaway Joe” music video appearance.

From classics like Dazed & Confused and A Time To Kill, to the rom-com era of How to Lose A Guy In 10 Days and Failure To Launch, and then the award winners like Dallas Buyers Club and True Detective, his resume is deep and impressive.

With that being said, I just randomly started thinking about a movie from my childhood, the 1994 classic, Angels in the Outfield.

Ya know, the cheesy feel-gooder about how actual angels helped a horrible California Angels team win the pennant.

And I totally forgot that Matthew McConaughey played Angels outfielder Ben Williams in the movie.

In case you need a refresher, he’s the outfielder who’s tracking down the flyball that’s way over his head, when out of nowhere, two angels fly down from the Heavens, pick him up, and carry him so he could get the out.

Of course, everybody in the crowd is mesmerized, because main character Roger Bommann is the only one who can see the angels.

Can we just talk about how star studded this cast was for a moment, considering it’s a kid’s movie?

We’re talking about a child-age Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Danny Glover, Christopher Lloyd, Tony Danza, Adrien Brody, AND Matthew McConaughey? Not to mention some other recognizable faces like Neal McDonough, Tony Longo, Robert Clohessy, Dermot Mulroney, and more.

Man, I didn’t realize the royalty of that cast back when I was six-years-old.

And the locker room explosion from Coach Knox:
