VIDEO: Tyler Childers Sings Masterful Acoustic Rendition Of “Matthew” At Pickathon

Not gonna lie, there’s been an empty space in my Spotify playlist, just waiting for Tyler Childers to drop some new music.

The man’s been playing some new music at his concerts here recently, but there is still no word on when those new songs may drop.

Of course, the Kentucky native dropped his full on fiddle instrumental album Long Violent History back in 2020, which contains only one song, the title-track, that features Childers actually singing.

However, we haven’t heard any true word on a new album from the man since his 2019 Country Squire album.

With that being said, we still have his past music to enjoy, as a video has resurfaced of his 2019 performance of “Matthew” at Pickathon, which is on the Country Squire album.

Just Childers and his acoustic guitar, a fiddle, and a banjo, the man delivers the story of “Matthew” to perfection, painting the perfect picture of the hard working blue-collar people of Appalachia.

Tyler Childers Records “Whitehouse Road”

It always incredible to look back on some of your favorite country music artists and see how they got their start.

Whether it’s Dolly Parton singing in a gas station parking lot, Luke Combs singing on Vine in college, or even Eric Church singing in a high school choir, everybody has got to start somewhere.

It’s also cool to see where some of their most incredible songs got made.

Take Tyler Childers for instance… he’s one of the few non-mainstream artist who’s been able to garner such a loyal following that he’s achieved Gold and Platinum records… four of them to be exact.

“All Your’n” recently went Platinum from his Country Squire album, meanwhile three songs from Purgatory, “Lady May,” “Feathered Indians,” and “Whitehouse Road,” have gone Platinum as well.

And today, we’re taking you back to the studio for that glorious day when “Whitehouse Road” was born.

Recorded on March 22, 2014, the man behind the camera shares how it all went down:

“Background on this — I was at Trackside Studios in Huntington, WV by invitation of. . . someone?

My mind is fuzzy and I think Ian had told me if I wasn’t busy I may want to go shoot some photos behind the scenes while Tyler was recording his album. I’d always liked Tyler and, when I could be bothered to leave the house to listen to someone play, it was mostly him.

He was (and is) a good guy and, back when I shot this back on March 22, 2014, I was happy to see every day that passed was another day he was getting better at what he did.

Anyway. . . . I was in the middle of trying to upgrade some of my ancient equipment and was playing around with shooting video alongside some photos. My low light capabilities with my camera/lens combos was a little lacking, so I ended up getting less than I wanted.

Having never really fucked with doing documentary work in this environment, I was disenchanted with what I thought I could offer Tyler. . . or Ian. . . or Bud. . . . So I sat on this for almost 5 years.

I cut off about the first 30 seconds of the song fucking around with my gear. . . and I wasn’t too worried about it because I was just going to cut this together into something else anyway.

Time changes everything, though, so now I present this to you as an artifact from a young artist whose music has come to mean a lot to a lot of people.

Hope you enjoy it.”

And the rest is history.

This will forever be one of my personal favorites from Childers… check it out:
