I can’t even imagine…

New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso encountered a near death experience yesterday, as he said today that he was lucky to be alive after surviving a terrifying car wreck.

He told the media while he was at Spring Training yesterday in Tampa, Florida:

“Yesterday was just a really close experience to death. My car flipped over probably about three times.

A guy ran a red light, t-boned me, and to me I’m just really thankful to be alive, I’m really thankful that I’m healthy.

I’m very thankful to be here. It’s just anything can happen at any given moment, and I’m just super super blessed to be here.

Alonso ended up having to kick through the windshield to escape his flipped truck, and both him and the driver of the other car walked away from the accident with very minor injuries.

But perhaps the craziest part of the whole thing is that Alonso’s wife Haley was in the car right behind him, and witnessed the whole scene… not knowing if her husband was even alive or not.

She wrote in a heartfelt message today on Instagram:

“Yesterday as Pete and I were heading to Spring Training, a distracted driver ran a red light going at an extremely fast rate and hit directly into Pete’s truck. I was in my car following behind him and saw the whole thing happen in front of me.

Once the car struck the side of his truck, it flipped 3 times and slid into where you see it in these videos. I slammed on my breaks, jumped out of my car and ran up to his truck. I was terrified of what I was going to see. I couldn’t see inside of the truck because the windshield was shattered.

I screamed for him just hoping that he’d be able to answer me. He said he was ok and was going to kick out the windshield to escape since he was trapped. He got himself out and to everyone’s shock, only had a single scratch on his arm. It’s a miracle that he’s safe after this horrifying of an accident.

I thought I watched my husband die in front of me and I will never forget that feeling. This could’ve easily unfolded much differently and that’s what is so scary. Life can be taken from us in an instant. Please do not drive distracted and wear your seatbelt. This happened 5 minutes from our house, it can happen anytime, anywhere.”

She also shared footage of the aftermath… and it’s brutal.

Pete Alonso is one of the good guys of baseball, and you hate to see something like this happen to anybody.

It’s great to know that he was able to walk away from the accident with practically zero injuries.
