Elk Hunt Becomes A Wolf Hunt When Pack Starts Closing In On Hunters

Elk hunt calls in wolves

Talk about a sudden change of plans…

It’s definitely not an everyday thing to successfully call in your target animal, only to have a completely different predator crash the party. But remember, the woods have ears. If you’re a wolf traveling in a pack, an elk bugle echoing through the timber is basically a dinner bell ringing.

Considering a single wolf can pack away 10 pounds of meat daily, a hungry pack needs a massive amount of food to keep the troops fed. A big bull elk fits the bill perfectly.

During a hunt up in British Columbia (at least, that’s where this seems to be filmed), these guys managed to call in a pair of bulls. The elk were well within range, so it’s a bit of a head-scratcher why they hesitated on the trigger—a choice they probably kicked themselves for seconds later. Out of nowhere, the elk bolted for higher ground. The hunters were left scratching their heads wondering what gave them away… right up until the wolves stepped out into the open.

An entire pack emerges, locking eyes directly with the hunters. Their cover was completely blown.

Realizing the elk hunt is officially busted, the hunter hits the dirt to pivot strategies. But wolves are cunning. They inch closer to check out the situation before the majority of the pack darts off the road, closing the window of opportunity. Hoping for a second chance, the hunter creeps up the road. Sure enough, one wolf steps back out and makes the fatal error of pausing to take a look.

The hunter lets a shot fly. It connects a little high, but it packs enough punch to drop the wolf right in its tracks.

It’s hard to tell if the pack was actually maneuvering to flank the guys, or if they were just hot on the elk’s trail and got caught off guard by the humans. The comment section got pretty heated over the wolf kill… some thought they were retreating, though plenty of folks agreed it looked like the pack was actively moving into a flanking formation. But if you have a wolf tag, you have a wolf tag… not much to argue about.

But the absolute funniest part of the whole clip? The second after dropping the wolf, the hunter immediately starts bugling for elk again. Hate to break it to you bud, but those bulls are in the next zip code by now…

Black Wolf Spotted Prowling Yellowstone At Night

Yellowstone National Park is hands down one of the most breathtaking spots in the entire country. It honestly doesn’t matter what season you visit or what time of day you step outside… you’re practically guaranteed to witness something mind-blowing. From grizzly bears and massive bison to roaming elk and wild wolves, it’s a front-row ticket to America’s wildest show.

Back in 2017, Siddharth Gandhi managed to capture an unbelievable encounter on camera when a mammoth wolf came casually strolling down a two-lane road in the Lamar Valley. Fast forward to today, and the clip has racked up a whopping 11 million views.

And for good reason—this animal is an absolute BEAST. Seriously, it looks like a CGI dire wolf pulled straight off the set of Game of Thrones. It’s that perfect mix of undeniably majestic and completely terrifying.

Get a close-up look for yourself… nature really is a wild, beautiful thing.
