Kevin Costner’s John Dutton Will Play A Pivotal Role In The Upcoming ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff, ‘Dutton Ranch’

Kevin Costner won’t be starring in the new Yellowstone spinoff… but the presence of John Dutton will certainly be felt.

Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly are reprising their roles as Rip Wheeler and Beth Dutton in the sequel series Dutton Ranch. Yellowstone fans can’t wait to watch the show that’s been described as “Yellowstone Season 6,” and for the longest time, viewers had no idea when the Paramount+ should would be airing.

After all, Dutton Ranch was originally supposed to air in late 2025. It was eventually pushed back to an “Early 2026” release, but even that wasn’t looking promising as the months rolled on. But back in March, we finally got an update from the official Dutton Ranch social media in the form of a teaser trailer and a May 15 premiere date.

We’ve also got a fresh, new synopsis for the series which reads like this:

“Rip Wheeler and Beth Dutton gamble everything on a new life in South Texas, but the promise of building a future far from the ghosts of Yellowstone quickly collides with brutal new realities and a rival ranch that will stop at nothing to protect its empire.”

One of those “ghosts of Yellowstone” that will presumably play a large role in Dutton Ranch? That’d be Beth’s father, John Dutton.

In a new teaser that was shared by the official Dutton Ranch social media account, Beth and Rip can be seen sitting at a dinner table while looking at the cowboy hat Kevin Costner used to don in the flagship series. Next to it is a childhood photograph, and both things together apparently caused the pair to become retrospective.

Beth can be heard saying:

“I miss him.”

Cole Hauser’s Rip Wheeler replies with this line:

“We brought the best part of your father with us.”

Though Beth and Rip are no longer in Montana, it appears that everything about their life there – and the legacy of John Dutton – has followed them to South Texas. Why do I say that? Well, after that initial moment of reflection for Beth Dutton, the rest of the teaser shows violence, fire and just about everything else you would expect from Reilly and Hauser’s characters.

It even includes this bada** line from Beth Dutton as she appears to talk to Annette Bening’s character:

“Legacy is a beautiful thing, but only if it survives.”

May 15 can’t get here soon enough.

The Beth and Rip-focused spinoff will consist of nine total episodes in its debut season. I don’t want to get ahead of myself, but I can’t imagine it only being a one-season run. Surely Reilly and Hauser are ready to keep the storyline of their Yellowstone characters going for the foreseeable future.

And the teaser trailer looks like Dutton Ranch is going to be a whole lot of fun. The intensity appears to be dialed up to the max, the violence gives big-time Yellowstone vibes, and the performances from Hauser and Reilly could be award worthy. If you haven’t had a chance to watch it just yet, here’s the official teaser trailer for Dutton Ranch.
