Cash Cabin Moving To Jamaica? John Carter Cash Sets The Record Straight After People Fall For April Fools’ Joke

Johnny Cash’s son, John Carter, pulled one over on his followers this past April Fools’ Day.

You’ve always got to keep your head on a swivel when the first of April rolls around. Admittedly, the unofficially official holiday used to be more fun before the internet became plagued by fake posts and misinformation. But it still can be fun, and somehow, April Fools’ can still fool the masses. If you need proof, look no further than John Carter Cash convincing his followers that the Cash Cabin was moving from Nashville to Jamaica.

If you’ve never heard of the Cash Cabin, and you’re guessing that it’s associated with Johnny Cash, you’d be correct. The structure was built by Johnny Cash in 1979, and it’s located in Hendersonville, Kentucky – just a short drive from Nashville. It was originally owned by Johnny and June Carter Cash, and now belongs to to their son, John Carter Cash.

The private recording studio looks more like a hunting cabin than anything else, but it’s actually home to the creative, musical endeavors of the son of John and June… and whoever else he trusts to use and appreciate the space. When Jamey Johnson joined us on the Whiskey Riff Raff podcast, he shared that he loves utilizing the Cash Cabin, and says that it feels like it should be a museum.

It’s a beloved site, and a Nashville area staple for music makers. So maybe that’s why people were somewhat caught off guard and slightly upset when John Carter shared this message:

“I have an announcement. Ana and I want to thank everyone in our lives for being so dedicated and for sharing so much love. We most certainly appreciate the life. We have been living in Tennessee, but we have made a decision that it’s time for us to make a move. My parents place in Cinnamon Hill, Jamaica was absolutely the most beautiful place in the world for me growing up. I’ve had the chance over the past few months to go back down again and have decided that I’m going to be moving back home.

Cash Cabin studio will be moved to Jamaica basically. Not log for log, but all of the gear and the entire production crew. I would also like to invite any of the Nashville musicians who are reading this to please come and record with us there! Jamaica means the world to me and from this point on it is going to be my world, completely. We are going to be calling the studio ‘Cash Cabin South.’ Please come visit us.”

To be clear, he shared that on April 1.

Most people saw that post, chuckled a bit, and moved on with their day knowing that it was April Fools’. However, some might people that post as the truth, and in a way… I see why they would. Jamaica is very special to the Cash family, and it wouldn’t be a stretch for John Carter Cash and his wife, Ana, to pull up their roots and relocate to there.

If you take a peek into the comments of that above post, most are sending their well wishes and congratulating John Carter and Ana on the big move. The only thing is… it was just a joke. Anything that’s posted on April Fools’ Day can be assumed as such, and things apparently got so bad that John Carter came out and posted once more to clarify that they weren’t actually moving the Cash Cabin:

“Guys. This is too funny. There are people sending Ana and me messages wishing me good luck and my new life in Jamaica. So many didn’t think to look at the calendar when they read what I wrote. It was an April Fools joke! I love Jamaica, but I would never leave the Cash Cabin!! I can’t wait till next year to see what I can figure for next April Fools.”

Maybe next year, John Carter will go with something a little more outlandish for April Fools’ Day so followers know beyond a shadow of a doubt that it’s all just joke. Though I’d argue that moving the Cash Cabin to Jamaica is pretty absurd as it is…
